Heard a few politicians say this about Gay Mitchel. Now, regardless of who the candidate was how DARE they say that? It's OUR right to vote for whoever we choose. It's up to the VOTERS to determine who deserves to be in the post. The people did not determine that he deserved to be president so he DIDN'T deserve to be the president. Each one got what votes they deserved as determined by the voters

Indeed. I recall Cowen turning up at my polling booth and physically forcing me to vote YES.

It still haunts me to this day.

nono, this isn't about Mitchel. This is about the attitude that he (or any other one of 'em) deserved to do better than they did. It was pretty much: He deserved to do better than he did. BAD voters, BAD!!!!!

My guess is this is just politicians trying to be diplomatic about a colleague cratering spectacularly. I.e. those words are as likely intended for Mitchel himself as anyone else.

Jaysus, don't get so riled up over it! They're obviously just plamasing him. Much like you might consolingly ruffle the hair of a young lad who just lost the egg and spoon race! :pac:

It's actually more insulting to GM that any of us.

I dunno, if one of them said gallagher deserved to do worse than he did, I'd agree. It's just an opinion.

It is an empty platitude and means nothing.

I agree, pretty disgusting comment from Varadker. He's gone way down in my estimation.

I would take this view. When put on the spot they would have to say something that would be 'diplomatic' and un-incriminating for them. After all they may be in the same party as him.

As we saw during the selection process there are a lot of divisions in FG

It is just the old FG sense of entitlement kicking in.

Being one of the earlier parties in the State's history, they automatically assume that they will always be top - or 2nd best - of the mountain with voters.

They would like the 'holy trinity' of themselves, FF and Labour to be preserved forever.

Indeed, Ivan Yates had a go at Lucinda Creighton this morning claiming that other FG members blame her for the push to nominate Mitchell over Pat Cox.

The famous quote from the election centre in the US springs to mind.

Interview to failed candidate: So, the people have spoken?
Candidate: Yes, the people have spoken. The bastards.

Gay Mitchell apparently is a good local politician and may not have been the best choice for the Presidential race, I've heard a lot of good things said of him when it comes to individual and local needs, that ,unfortunately doesn't transfer to national level,
I think the blame should lie with his selection in the first place, not his fault that he's"a bit grey" no personal judgement here but a brighter younger candidate may have gotten further.
Dosen't say much for Finn Gael either since most of their supporters abandoned him.
It does though, say a lot about what people think of this governments record so far which has been cowardly and abysmal.
The whole system needs to grow a pair(pardon my french)

But straight after saying it, he said that it is the people's decision, and the people had spoken. I think people are reading too much into comments like that. It's a standard platitude that gets trotted out when a candidate loses badly. Saying it doesnt actually mean that you somehow disrespect democracy. Its a bit like when they say that a sports team didn't deserve to lose, when clearly they did based on not scoring more than the winner.

Deserves got nothing to do with it

Pathetic comment alright but I guess they were just trying to make him feel better about his abysmal performance in the election. I think he thought he was running for Taoiseach which clearly he would relish as I observed on the Kenny debate as he pounded one hand in to the other and told us all to face up to the hard decisions of the recession a speech he clearly has given many times in his own head personally I found that offensive almost to the point of nausea.

He deserved to do exactly how he did. That is the whole point of the long, drawn-out, exhaustive, intrusive inspection by the public during the campaign.
