    Hi all,
I drove to the shop yesterday as I parked I felt a chug (no warning light appeard on the dash), I turned off the car and parked up. 15 mins later I returned to the car. I tried to start it but it wouldnt turn over. So I called my mechanic (a former bmw mechanic) he plugged in the computer and it didnt show any readings. After towing it to his place and he has just informed me that the timing chain needs to be replaced.

Any ideas? How much should it cost(parts/labour)?

I'm clueless when it comes to cars...

nothing came up on this computer, but the timing chain needs to be replaced???

Em i think you need a second opinion. bring it to a reputable BMW independent, PM me if you want some contact details of someone worthwhile.

Ring BMW, The 1 series had a recall for faulty chain tensioners iirc

As for no fault coming up, thats very possible as I have a BMW that I'm rebuilding at the moment that the tensioner failed on and caused the timing to slip way off, damaging some valves and the chain guides etc...and it has a clear fault reading.

+1 on the clear fault reading. I've seen it before too.
