I'm wondering where I would go in the city to see if stuff on my hard drive is retrievable. Any suggestions?

I'd offer to do it as a goodwill gesture as a boardsie done a good deed for me lately but i'm away for the weekend, then going on a bit of a session until I fly out to Asia for 3 months so can't committ... if you're still stuck in Feb 2012 i'll take a look though :pac:

Aw thanks John! Sure it's the thought that counts. :D

No suggestions for places though? Would PC World do something like that?

It still has life in it but it won't mount properly and the software keeps freezing. :(

have you tried taking a look yourself? I'm in no way good at IT and the time I tried to recover drive it failed completely (because it was absolutly wrecked by physical damage) but have you tried using a boot disk operating system loaded with hard drive diagnostic equipment? if you take a look at torrents sites you'l find ones that are made up with multiple diagnostic and recovery tools. I'd download HawkPe anyway even if it doesn't work for you its an extremely useful tool if anything else goes wrong with your computer.

I tried looking at it through DiskUtility on my Mac but it's not even showing up as a drive there. I wouldn't know where to start with those softwares and my download limit is well breached this month so I think it would be just as cheap as going to a shop. :o

If in two weeks (when I get back to Galway) you still haven't found someone to fix it I'd be happy to take a look at it for you.

Thank you, I'll keep it in mind! :)

If the crowd in TechStar take it, they'll probably have to keep it overnight won't they? It'll mean having to bus it in to Galway again tomorrow!

There is a internet place on Dominic Street that does repairs. It is opposite E Brun. They have just sorted out my friends old Dell . Nip in they will give you an idea of what is needed.

I haven't used any of these (yet, touch wood)

Bounced over to Computers, maybe they can advice you how to manage this yourself with free SW.
    What disk is it?
    For what OS?

    Damn, too late now!

I dropped it into TechStar earlier. They should know tomorrow what's up with it. Much rather doing it this way than going at it myself and breaking it.
Can't believe it went out like this though, I thought it would have been broken in a crash a year ago but nope, it just happens randomly!

    Thanks for yer help!

Were Techstar able to do anything, I need to have my external HD looked at so wondering if you would recommend?
    Thanks
