pencil for ballot paper

when i went to vote, there was a pencil in the polling booth, I marked my papers and put them into the ballot box.

when i was driving home afterwards, i thought that this was a bit odd, as this may give someone the oppourtunity to modify my vote.
Am i being too cautious?
is there a criteria for pen or pencil to be used?

Noticed this and said it, but they just shrugged their shoulders.
It is bad alright, should have been a marker pen like a sharpie...

We should put all the pencils into storage at a cost of 100k a month while we source pens

Any election I've ever voted in, there's been a pencil provided. You could always bring your own pen/marker.

The ballots are locked, then opened in full view of everyone.

you can go watch the count if you want.

There is no opportunity to systematically change the ballots.

I'd imagine a pencil is used so that you can alter it yourself if you make a mistake.
As a previous poster mentioned, boxes are opened in public, so fraud would be very difficult

i the other pencil was tied with a string and was afraid that they would report it to the gards
