Is it possible to have one oil boiler feeding into a house and a granny flat.....working off different fuel tanks and independent of each other. In the house it would only be a back up in winter but would be the primary source for granny flat.

Thanks Heinbloed .... any elaboration/comment?! Having asked plumber before he maintained that it was a 'big job', and 'awkward' to do!! Is it?

Its possible but it is not the norm. What your really looking to do is connect 2 oil tanks on one side and on the other your looking to zone the heating.

Considering most oil companies will not deliver anything less than 300 euro worth of oil it would make sense just to charge the granny flat 300 euro heating a year and leave it at that.

But it being politics and familes i am sure there is reasons for everything.

Why not just get a second electric meter for the granny flat and have it on economy rates?

After all if the boiler breaks down who foots the bill.

Thanks Joey....thing is the granny in this case will be the mother inlaw and ya i know cry me a river ssssshh! but she wont be moving in there for a few years but im building it now while doing main house and will rent it out to John Q public in the interim so ya i am going with the separate esb meter for the flat and want to make the energy used totally separate to for this reason not only for now but also when the in law arrives:D thoughts?

For political reasons it is not going to work out unless you have 2 boilers and 2 tanks.

Think about it.... If i am renting off you and i have a seperate tank i wont believe that you dont have access to my heating oil unless you have given me a seperate tank and feed. So for this reason i would do everything seperate.

I honestly think on a granny flat the best way to go is storage heating.

It does totally away with politics.

Ya i see what you're saying Joey....so an electrically space and hot water heated flat. It would cut out the confusion and indeed reduce initial outlay if not running costs...which im not too bothered about:D

exactly... But no harm asking a plumber to burry a length of pipe before covering up incase you change your mind later.

Remember no matter what. A daughter will never see her mother cold.

Why dont you look into zoning the flat separately and installing a heat meter on it.
