98 Corolla, Airbag light codes, can anyone help?

Dear all, I'm hoping the community can help me here. Further to my previous thread, my 98 Corolla failed NCT as there was no Airbag light. I since replaced the bulb on the instrument panel but now realise that the repaired light remains on all the time. So today, I took it to Toyota and had them diagnose the fault.

They advise that diagnostics are returning codes 12 and 31. Apparently 12 = what they call the "squib" or spiral cable. 31 = airbag ECU. They have quoted me 500 + VAT for parts (not including labour). That sort of money is just not an option for me. So I guess I am asking, is there anyone here who knows a thing or two about the older Corollas and how I might approach this problem?

    (a) I take it I will have to start ringing round the scrap dealers and try to get hold of SH parts, should I start with the ECU and see if that clears the light?

    (b) Is the ECU easy to get at, remove and replace? any guidance here greatly appreciated.

    (c) How do I reset the light to test new work?

The ECU is the expensive bit.

I had a 1996 Toyota Celica which developed an air bag light warning.
It was a Jap Import, and a mechanic working out of a garage in Clondalkin solved the problem with the spiral cable for around €100.

    But my ECU was okay.

Reseting the light might be tricky as a 1998 car probably doesn't have a standard OBD connector, so you need a Toyota proprietary connection.
Although obviously your initial garage had that equipment to read the codes.

But if you want that garage details it's : AutoGarage.ie in Clondalkin village.

He had the Toyota connectors to read & reset the codes.
He's a polish mechanic, and a good "bodger" for patching old cars up.

There must be a way to reset the light shorting a connector behind the dash etc. That's the way a lot of older models can be done so I'm hoping someone here knows and can advise.

If I were to get at the clock spring myself, is that doable? I dont want the dam airbag exploding into my face so how to do it safely? I've been reading around and it seems older clock springs can develope cable cracks etc. If I could get at it at least I'd be able to test it's continuity with a meter.

I wonder is the ECU fault merely reflecting the clock springs fault?
