I am soon to qualify and will most likely be unemployed. I am planning on applying for gradute positions in other fields but am unsure what areas will take on a newly qualified Solicitor. Anybody know of/heard of what field the estimated 1000 unemployed solicitors are working on or have they mostly emigrated/remained unemployed.

Good question , if we are to believe the newspapers then we have Solicitors working in McDonalds
I know only 1 Solicitor out of work and for now she is working in the family business and loving it so much she's not too sure she'll go back to a legal career !

I actually don,t know anyone that was let go sitting at home staring at the walls. They,ve all been rehired in legal or semi legal jobs or they have emigrated and are working mostly in legal jobs. None of my friends are married/have kids so they are pretty mobile.Don,t know how it is for those a few years older.

There's a surprising amount of in-house jobs going.

I don't know anyone who has qualified and is out of work. I know one person who finished an LLB and is working in retail at the moment but if they go on through Blackhalls or Kings Inns I'd say they'd find a position easily enough.

I can assure you that there are lots of qualified solicitors
out of work. I know plenty. Newly qualified jobs are very thin on the ground. Many newly qualifieds can't find legal jobs and either emigrate or work in other areas.

To be honest job prospects for nq solicitors are very bleak, particularly if you aren't kept on by their firm.

Ah well so be it. I don't think anyone would mind a trip across to the US of A or Australia to get a bit of work in an profession they love.

I know nothing about law but my question is How can you study the laws of Ireland for years and then emigrate to work at law in another country ? Surley the law is different in Australia or Usa ? Just wondering :)

Not a huge difference if you can read a law in Ireland you can read a Law here.

Besides Lawyer is on the skills list so if they must recognise prior training.

I just want to wish you the very best in finding something in your line in which you will receive a salary, most people now with good qualifications like yourself are now offered voluntary positions, such as Internships and programmes, I know this offers valuable hands on experience but really, it also brings money into any organisation, puts food on the table of the employer and helps them pay their mortgage, and therefore should be rewarded by a salary. If you do not find a good employer emigrate thats my advice.
