Can't see an existing thread about this. Anyone know what this is about?
The Faroe Islands Football Association (FSF) has confirmed that Brian Kerr will not continue as national team coach beyond the end of his deal which expires next month.

Although no official reason has been given as to why the former Republic of Ireland boss is vacating the post, the governing body said in a short statement it was saddened it "was not possible to agree a new contract" with the 58-year-old.

Kerr, who took charge in April 2009, oversaw a win and a draw in UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying as his squad finished bottom of Group C. The victory, a 2-0 success against play-off contenders Estonia, was the Faroe Islands' first in EURO qualifying since October 1995.

    Or even in Ireland!
There's been talk of existing managers here being poached by other teams in Scotland and England, and even the N.Ire team.

He would be a good signing for any team.

Strong rumours he will be the next Northern Ireland manager.

He couldn't agree a contract with the Faroes so he left. A lot of it is about putting money into the development of the youth.

He also said he is taking a few months out of the game.

If Norn Iron can get him on board it'll be a huge move for them!

There will be bitters that won't like the idea of him taking the NI job.

In fact, he'll get abuse from some sections, I'd bet my house on it.

    Good manager though.

A lot of NI supporters would welcome his appointment because of the job he has done with the Faroes. But of course there is a lot of opposition to him because of his links to the ROI & of his catholic roots. Most of the opposition would be from the N.I Rangers supporters which is kinda of ironic because he supported Rangers like his father did.
He'd be an excellent appointment for the North & might also help them keep the catholic players who might be considering switching alliances.

I can't see the Northern Ireland supporters taking too kindly to Brian Kerr getting the NI manager's job.

It would be a bit like Roddy Collins getting the Linfield managers job, it's not going to happen.

No it wouldn't. Brian's parents are from the North, both sides of the community. A lot of N.I fans recognise that he is an experienced manager that did a very good job with the Faroes, a country with a population of 50,000. It would only be the Rangers idiots that would be against his appointment but as I said he supported Rangers as did his father & grandfather.

It shouldn't matter who he or his grandad supported !

Paddy Mc Court and Niall McGinn recieved bullets in the post only this year ffs. Not to mention Lennon who had to retire because of death threats.

There's too many bitter knuckle draggers to accept a manager from the Republic.

I feel sorry for the normal NI fans tbh.

ya i think he is odds on for the NI job. he was doing the PAOK v rovers game last week and it was mentioned a few times to him and he didnt deny it and said it was a big and great job.

The common denominator there being ====> they all played for Celtic.
Don't remember Brain Kerr playing for Celtic.

How does a issue about Northern Ireland suddenly turn into an anti Rangers story? Rangers appointed a Catholic manager in recent times and he was given a heroes welcome( before he flopped!) Some of Rangers' great players over the years were Catholics and were hero worshipped. This is a non story, he would be great appointment for the North and I hope it happens. Brian Kerr is a thoroughly decent man and manager.

Kerr isn't odds on for the NI job, he's as far out as 5/1.

Michael O' Neill is odds on for it.

Kerr would be a great appointment for the North. Sure there would be the bad sectors of support who would be inclined to give him a hard time though I would hope they'd be stifled by the majority who have a sincere wish to see a cross community team. It would be great PR but PR is secondary to managerial skill which Kerr certainly has. He was dreadfully unlucky with Ireland, he lost the faith of the fans and FAI and was out of a job. It was sad and sadder still when we see who came immediately after him but that's the way it went. The North could be contenders again if they were given a bit of shape and guile. I think Kerr would be the right man to instill that in them.

His previous history will be less of an issue if he can achieve good results unfortunately the opposite is also true

Good for Ireland in terms od WC 2014 qualification, should make the Faroes a little bit easier.

There has been talk of Trap leaving even if we qualify, so could we see a return of Kerr?

Doubt it. In fact I say no chance.

Had great time for Kerr personally, taught he was unlucky and some of Irish players let him down at times.

I think Kerr's been embittered by his dealings with the FAI as well. I wouldn't really blame him if that is true.

Some people want to see Mick back. I don't know. I don't know who Ireland would get as the next manager if Trap decides to leave, regardless of how the playoffs pan out. If the team were poised to go to the Euros then it would make the job more attractive but no way would Trap bow out unless somebody's hand was forced.

Some people want Ireland playing attractive football or, that is to say, relatively attractive football because I don't know when the team has ever really played a full game of silky flowing football. There's always been that bony brittle element to the Irish style it would seem. I'm not with the crowd that say they'd rather see attractive football even if that means losing more than winning. I'd like to see Ireland play successful football. That did not happen under Kerr but it was really a series of moments that decided that part of his career.

Kerr would do well in another international setup. It won't be Ireland but he's due one good, good run at it somewhere. Given the time, the resources and the trust and we'll be suddenly wondering why the Irish setup dropped him 6 years ago.

Trapattoni will be manager until we are knocked out the European Championships. If we qualify, he'll be the manager. The talk of him leaving is about when his contract ends.

As for Kerr, it would be great to see him get a chance with another decent team. He has all the attributes for a good international manager at a middle ranked team. I'd say he'd do a great job with the North so long as there wasn't any nonsense with the fans.

Aren't St Johnstone looking for a manager

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,536 ✭✭✭✭briany

Qualification should be more than enough leverage to secure a new deal and maybe then some but if Trap feels his performance warrants a certain sum that the FAI cannot afford and Denis O Brien suddenly has a change of heart then we could see the unimaginable happen. However, that is VERY unlikely going by current indicators but Ireland needs Trap more than Trap needs Ireland so Trapattoni is not going to lie down if the FAI do not decide to back down from hardball negotiations.

The only irish manager to have us playing attractive football whilst qualifying for things is Mick McCarthy

Brian Kerr should never come back to work for the national team. He deserves better than he was treated and i'd love for them to reach out to him and for him to tell them to suck his balls!

But yeh, Kerr. Can see him taking the NI job personally & would be a great step up for them. Im sure theres plenty of other smaller international teams that will also be looking for managers in the coming months.

If Trap had any real intentions of leaving the job even if he did qualify then it would be decent of him to make it known well ahead of time so that a worthy successor could be appointed in time for the tournament proper.

McCarthy also had twice the amount of talent. Roy Keane was top class. Robbie Keane and Duff were in their primes. The poor players in that squad would be considered good nowadays given the team we have.

The sooner we and football in general cop on and get over this whole religion-in-football crap the better.

If my Glasgow mates who are Rangers fans can move on and not be stuck in the past, why the **** can't we Celtic fans do the same?

I'm sick of it at this stage - we need a good, long look at ourselves.

AFAIK his contract also covers the tournament if we qualify.

I've always been of the belief that Kerr shouldnt have been sacked unless we had a proper world class manager lined up to replace him. His record isnt that different than Trap's and with a bit of luck would have gotten us to a tournament. That didnt happen but either did the world class (or even halfway good) manager being lined up. If anyone considers Stan a world class manager, please take a long walk off a short pier.

I'd love to see Kerr back in charge if Ireland, but I'm not holding my breath on it happening with the current set up in the FAI. On overhaul there and we might be in business.

Kerr did ok for us, but was very negative. That Israel game at home changed everything for him. 2-0 up Keane went off injured he brought on Graham Kavanagh and just sat back. We ended up drawing 2-2 at home, after also going 1 up away thanks to Clinton Morrissons goal...ended in 1-1 draw too. If we had won even 1 of those games we were in playoffs.
Even in last must win game v Switz in Dublin I think we had 1 attempt on target, an Ian Harte header. It was time for him to go...but geeze we expected better than the joke we got!!

Oh man, that Israel game in Dublin ..... I'll bet that sales of Palestinian flags rose threefold in the immediate aftermath!

Reminds of the Apres Match "News from Germany for your region" skit.

Skip to 00:40 for the pertinent bit but it's all funny.
