Pipes shaking - mains problem?

    Hi all,

a really quick question - just went to flush the loo, and all of a sudden, the pipes started making very loud noises, shaking the walls of the house (timberframe). I then checked the mains in the kitchen - and an anwful lot of brown water came out in spurts - there also seems to be a lot of air in the mains.

Now, before I call a plumber - could the pipes shaking just be from a disruption to the mains supply - and will everything be ok once water has been restored (council didnt even announce any works to the water supply, but hey...) Do I need to vent the pipes? Or could this be something more sinister?

    Any advice appreciated!

It does sound like air in the system caused by disruption to the supply. I wouldn`t worry too much but run the kitchen tap until the water clears. A good idea is to fill a glass of water and let it sit for a while to check for sediment etc.

cheers for that! was scared to flush the loo again - will try later, once the water has come back properly to the kitchen tap...

    thanks!

And don't worry if it goes on for a bit. We are near the end of the pipe and if there is cleaning done at the water plant then we can have 2 or even 3 days of shaking pipes and the sound of a Brass Band tunning up (badly) every time the toilet cistern fills up.
