Updating to iOS 5 deletes your text messages?

I updated my iPhone last week and as I delete my texts as I get them it wasn't a problem. But a few people have told me that their texts were deleted and couldn't be restored when updating to iOS 5. Is there any way around this, and if not, is there a way for me to back them up before updating?

I updated 2 iphones to ios 5, did a sync to backup then clicked update and once updated restored from the last backup and all texts remained.

Okay, cheers, James. But it's my g/f's iPhone I have to update and she's a real hoarder of messages. I'm not sure it's a risk I'm willing to take.:)

My own GF is the same - I told her to put her important texts into the Notes app and I synced that to Outlook and I could see it was there before I upgraded.

No need to do that. The texts can be extracted from the backup done before the upgrade.
