Started a thread over on the 4x4 forum last night but it's a bit quiet there this morning so I'm just looking for recommendations for a friend as to where to get his car looked at. Any help appreciated.

You could try MKW - they're very knowledgable and honest, if sometimes a little slow to return calls. http://www.mkwmotors.boschauto.co.uk/

The pressure plate may have failed, depending on how it has failed the pedal can still feel fine.
