Crazy Hard Disk Prices?

I had some Samsung Spinpoint 2TB hard disks in my basket on dabs for the last few weeks as I forgot to remove them after deciding against buying at the time. They were €69 each. I happened to go back into my dabs account this morning and noticed the price of the drives has rocketed to €110 each :eek::eek:
I checked on komplett and amazon for similar drives and the prices for all 2TBs have gone sky high. What's going on with the price hikes??
A few months back I got 6x of those 2TB Samsung Spinpoint drives for €63 per disk!

The recent flooding in Thailand has forced some hard disk drive makers to suspend operations in the country. This in turn has caused a global shortage that has already driven up some price.

That would explain it alright. Didn't even think of the floods in Thailand! I'll be waiting for a few weeks to buy some disks methinks. Cheers...

You're mad to wait a few weeks if you actually need the drive(s), prices are going to be higher.

The shortages will last at least a few months until the factories get up to speed or production can be shifted elsewhere. And even then, any costs they incur will be passed on to the consumer.

It'll be months before they come back down. Probably 6-12 months before prices are back to €63 for 2TB.

I've heard on very good authority that there is literally only a couple of weeks normal supply worldwide of HDD's before severe shortages kick in due to the Thai flooding situation. The expected resolution of that isn't until around February next year.
Bottom line, if you're self building, buy now, prices are definitely not going to get any cheaper for several months.

I think I payed around £300 or so for a 20gig Quantum fireball hard disk back in the day, was a huge ammount back then :O . It failed shortly after the year though :(

2TB external hard drive on Amazon went from about £65 to £90 last night to £100 now. Gonna have some disappointed friends til things go back to normal.
