What do you mean by "clever"?

Picasa is probably one of the best free programs out there but I don't think it was intended for clever file renaming.

If its just renaming then you can do a lot at the command prompt.

Irfanview (free for personal use) isn't as polished a GUI as picasa however is very powerful. It has lots of batch renaming options if thats what you are looking for - here's a quick tutorial to give you a sense of what the batch rename in it can do.

Other than that, it would be worthwhile elaborating on exactly what you are trying to achieve.

thanks. I mean gui file renaming to include meaningful file stem e.g. img1, img2, img3 to Brazil2010-1, Brazil2010-2 etc. Picassa may even be able to do this but I coudn't find it.

actually found an "ok" way of doing this in picassa. you can select multiple files and rename with a stem and choose to append the date and time which will give them a unique name. will do for now...

In any folder hitting Ctrl+a and then F2 will allow you to rename all of the files in there, they will be automatically numbered in sequence.

    filename (1).jpeg
    filename (2).jpeg

    ..and so on.

    Not ideal, but very handy.

that's a great tip. didn't know that the files would be auto-numbered.
