Can anyone recommend a good way to do this?
Do I need some conversion software?

This new ipad seems more hassle than its worth!

Transfer the DVDs to your computer and then sync with the ipad via itunes. You'll need to rip them to the appropriate format (H264 I think).

Handbrake is a useful tool for that: http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php

Or, if you have stuff that is already ripped in a different from format, you can play them via third party apps such as VLC streamer.
