Clutch problem on 4x4 Skoda Octavia

I'm posting here on behalf of an older friend of mine who has a '02 4x4 Skoda Octavia. Recently the clutch pedal went soft on him a couple of times but today when he went to take the car out he couldn't select gear with the engine running. The pedal feels okay but it's not releasing the clutch or something.
Can anyone give me some clues as to what might be broke?

Ask them to pump the pedal up and down a few times, if it then works briefly, then either there is air in the system (If its hydraulic) or the seals in the slave cylinder (at the engine) or the master cylinder (on the bulkhead beside the brake fluid container) are gone.

I'll pass that on Jimmy - thanks a lot.

Just tried that and no joy so I'm guessing it's the seals.

I suppose next question is can anyone recommend a good garage/ dealership to carry out the repair and wht would be the likely costs?
