Gettin a tattoo !

I was just wondering, do tattoo's hurt alot ? some people are telling me that there fine, others are saying they hurt like hell.. i just wanted to know because i am getting my first tattoo wednesday and am a bit nervous because it is a pretty big tattoo, but at the same time i am really excited to be gettin it. i just want to know sort of what to expect. So any advice would be appreciated.
