pretty sure no. It would be a penalty it your ball stuck your bag.

Yes thanks Ive found that rule but cant seem to find anything about hitting your own equipment with your club. The player did penalise themselves a shot but I wasnt sure they were correct.

some info...i think it only refers to the ball striking the equipment and not the club as in your case:

"Hitting your partner or his/her equipment – If you inadvertently hit one of your golf foursome, his/her caddie, golf bag or equipment there is no penalty. You can cancel the shot and replay it or play the shot where it lies. But if you hit yourself, your own caddie, or your own equipment, there is a one stroke penalty and you must play the shot as it lies.

In tournament play the rules are slightly different. Your partner in a tournament is considered to be equal to yourself. If you hit your partner, his/her caddie or equipment it’s as if you hit yourself. One stroke penalty and you must play the ball as it lies. Be careful out there!"

    No I dont think It's a penalty.
How did this happen? Why did he have his bag so close? Did he not take a practice stroke and realize his bag was too close?

Its an older player Golfnut TBH I think its an energy conserving thing.. they never take a practice swing.

Not true - this only applies if you are playing matchplay and it is your opponent, your opponents caddy or equipment you hit.

Did he complete his swing and hit the ball ?

If he's addressed the ball and swung with the intention of hitting the ball only to be put off by hitting his bag, then its a stroke whether he hits the ball or not ...... same way as if you were beside a tree and decide to have a swish at the ball but catch the tree on your backswing.

I know he can stop and walk away mid backswing (like Tiger Woods), but its different if he actually hits something on his swing.

    Am I right?

I would have thought No if it was on the backswing (as stated) but yes on the downswing.....but if you missed on the backswing and hit your bag on the downswing you would need to check your swing plane....

Checked with our golf pro yesterday. He could nt find any ruling but was pretty sure no penalty.
