Wouldn't this be illegal and against the forum charter? Afaik VPN discussion or bypassing geolocation blocks isn't allowed here, I think Netflix is coming to Ireland soon so best off waiting for its launch...

Against their terms and conditions, yes. Illegal, doubtful. I doubt it's against the forum charter here either, it's not piracy, he's intending paying for the Netflix service. It's much the same as viewing the BBC iPlayer from here or RTE one from abroad, there have been threads on both of them before

I've had my 1 months Netflix trial running fine over vpn to a Boxee Box, SD only as I was using a free vpn but it worked fine. HD would have needed better faster paid vpn. I've read lots of good reports of https://overplay.net/ on the Boxee forum, some UK users were running HD content fine through them (needs 5.5mbit minimum)

Netflix aren't coming here till next year and we've not heard any pricing, I'll bet it will be lots cheaper through the USA when it does launch

This is in one of the stickied threads:
DO NOT ask how to proxy your way onto sites like Hulu. These websites are blocked for a reason.
From what I gather using a proxy/vpn to watch content without authorization is copyright infringement which is irionically the same as downloading the content from piratebay or the likes, the contents blocked over here for a reason! People seem to think recording a song of Youtube or using a VPN isn't as bad as downloading the item of Limewire/Piratebay etc...

Well go to the HTPC forum then, some mentions of vpn's there in the threads and nothing in the charter.

There's nothing illegal about vpn's, I've one setup for my sisters to watch the RTE player. You're being a little picky calling it copyright infringement, it's a streaming service, there is no local copy, he intends paying for it, nobody loses out. It's rather the opposite, Netflix gain a subscribing customer.

Big thread here about the BBC iPlayer, incidentally, it's not been closed. lots of mentions of Tor and vpn's, even from some of the mods

I agree with you completely, theres nothing illegal about VPNs, or Torrents for that matter but certain use of such services can be considered copyright infringement. Sure recording of the telly and sharing the recording with someone else is also infringement...
I've always been confused on certain forums boards allows talk of streaming ppv content and linking to which means you arn't paying the few quid premium to get to watch the program and give money to the rights owner, is this not the same as downloading a film, song or application without paying? I'm not saying for one moment I am innocent of such doings, but it does seem boards legally want to protect themselves so I could see suggesting VPN suggestions for purpose of using a service licensed in another country against the rules. People do seem to see streaming a lesser infringement than downloading a dvd rip/album rip or whatever, but the reality is it usually is the same

Using a vpn to access a service like Netflix is against their terms and conditions under USA law, we're not bound by USA law, it's not breaking any laws or regulations here.

Lending a book to your friend is copyright infringement if you want to be that picky. Next you'll be telling me it's unfair to change channel when the adverts come on....:p

I agree its stupid, and I don't agree with it. But I've read the rules of this forum and understand that such discussion isn't allowed hence my reply (I know a Mod didn't write it, but I'm assuming It's approved as it has been stickied). Books don't have copy protection and geoip blocking could be considered a "copy protection" measure. So by using a VPN to access an american service it could be considered a attempt to bypass copy protection. I know Ireland is quite lax on copyright laws, as is most of Europe, and its been argued in court, but I don't see why streaming or workarounds to stream foreign content should be allowed, while how to download DVD rips, TV rips etc cannot, I do see both as similar,

It's not all that bad and TV stations play the game too. Ever wonder why every channel has a DOG (digital onscreen graphic) in this day of age? There's absolutely no need for them, but to the TV station it's free advertising to have the station logo spinning in the corner to those who download copies ripped from TV.

I think if I provided a Rapidshare or torrent link say for example of a TV Show rip including branding logo here action would be taken such as thread removal, warning etc. But If I provide a stream of the same item or even instructions on how to view the program using a VPN or such its accepted? Thats what I'm getting at

Is that what you need? I know the thread went on a tangent but its worth pointing out that even buying a US Netflix sub you are not licensed unless living in the US :P

    I'm confused now:o

I'll be running all through my Apple TV, thus the need for a VPN Router. So if i get a pass thorugh i'll have to open the VPN 1st on my macbook and then use the Apple TV from there ?

Where as if i get a full VPN router i don't need to touch the Macbook at all ?

You should be ok, can you not jailbreak those things and setup proxys manually?
