I won't even have a beer the day before a run let alone before. I am slow enough without adding anything else to make me even slower!

I've run home a few nights from Leeson Street if that counts, or at least I think I did!

Beer has too much volume, the up/down motion of running combined with all that sloshing, will make you feel nauseous. Combine this with the gag reflex caused from the carbon dioxide bubbles, and you will soon be slowing to vomit. Hence, beer is not to be recommended for anything but the shorter sprints. Training for a strong constitution, and you could run gracefully up to 800m.

Spirits are too powerful a stimulant when combined with running. Many a runner has lined up with a swift brandy, only to become belligerent before the off. The 1960 Olympic steeplechase descended into chaos during the final. Favourite Nikolay Sokolov had been taunting the other athletes about his drinking prowess during the heats, downing several neat vodka's while on the line. He won his heat, famously swigging from his bottle after the final water jump, and urinating at the finish line. During the final, several athletes opted for hard liquor to quench their thirst, and a drunken melee broke out with two laps to go. This allowed the unfancied Pole Zdzisław Krzyszkowiak to bypass the brawl, and take the gold in a (then) new Olympic record. Tests later showed that he had in fact been drinking water throughout, and he returned home in disgrace.

But when choosing which variety of hooch best accompanies a run, the discerning athlete is advised to opt for a glass or two of wine. Quality is less important when on the track than when dining or woo-ing, so a robust Bordeaux AOC will suffice. Extensive testing in the South Wicklow area has shown no ill-effects for steady runs up to four or five miles, and this may include a degree of hillwork. Noakes devotes a chapter to the origins of barefoot running, the etymology of which came from the Tarahumara tribe of South America. Studies have shown they can run barefoot and wine-fueled for several tens of miles (usually being chased after been caught in flagrante enjoying their neighbours wine and wife).

i have ran from a pub to a house party before, there was no taxis and the house was about 3 mile away, if i walked it would have taken ages(or so i thought) and i would be missing drinking time, i was fairly drunk but was well able to do 3 easy miles, i did get the odd looks running up the street at 3am on a saturday night!

In May I had 2 or 3 Coronas and a mojito with a big feed in a Hard Rock Cafe on the first day of a stag. I then went out and did 6k around the park by the hotel before hitting the pubs of Lisbon. No puking or other undesirable after effects.

    I am legend. :p

On the few occasions I've gone to the pub and done a run later, I've had a couple of non-al Erdingers or Paulanders. They have a similar effect to a sports drink, and will enhance rather than worsen your running performance (apart from the need to stop and pee frequently).

I love beer. But honestly, there's no reason to have alcohol before a run, other than where it is an essential part of a sporting event (beer mile :)). If you've had a good solid run, treat yourself to a beer afterwards (along with enough water to rehydrate you).

I recall completing the London Circle line pub crawl. 27 stops between 5:30PM - midnight with half pint in each. The location of some pubs required running.

I echo what donothoponpop says about vomiting :P

Having a beer before running is not off the wall. It's the best way to really know what hitting the wall means :)
