It will have to be the same number registered to your "main" box otherwise they will assume that their subsidised multi room box is in a different house..

how do they "assume" this? do they call me to query it or do they just cut me off?
i have cables running all around the house and in one of the rooms using my upc phone line would be handier!

The boxes do a "callback" in the wee hours so as they will know what phone line it is connected to.

Both boxes need to be connected to the same telephone line otherwise as already pointed out Sky will assume that they are in different houses and therefore will charge full price for both boxes.

As to using UPC phoneline this is a Voip line and will only work in certain locations, some people have claimed to being able to use one sucessfully whereas others including myself have never managed to get them working.

Its a ridiculous rule in this day and age having to still use a phoneline as if they got rid of this Im sure I and all the other installers here would be unindated with work for second and third boxes.

+1, It's one of the main reasons I used to have to cancel jobs when I was an installer, much easier for people who didn't want phone lines to get chorus.
Nothing worse than cancelling a handy sky plus job over a phone line.

has anyone actually had it happen to them though and able to talk from experience?

when i plug it into the other phone line will sky (1) disable my multiroom? (2) bill me extra automatically? (3) contact me to find out what's going on? (4) something else?

    thanks

Yes but on the other side of it, i used to work for sky tech support and got alot of calls from customers going mad about this. We used to have to deal with it (due to sheer volume to cust services) and what happens is if you have conflicting numbers the system automatically changes your bill to reflect two full seperate packages.

You could try contacting sky and explain this, they will probably tell you it is in the terms and conditions though

Oh and FYI it is not just callbacks that serve this function, if you order sky box office etc and a conflicting number is used then the above will apply. Also just disconnecting the phone line from the box will at best only delay the above, i think it is three failed callbacks before the bill changes and if you ring sky for any reason the system will advise the agent to run a manual callback there and then

I did have a customer that managed to prove to sky he had 2 different phonelines operational in his rather large stately home. It was too difficult to connect a phoneline to both sides of his home so he payed for 2 instead one at each end of the house, one was in an office where one sky box was located and the other at the opposite side of the house.

He sent Sky a copy of both his phone bill's from each number which was an eircom bill and which proved the both lines were both in the same house and Sky actually accepted it, it was however a battle to prove this etc so it mite be worth phoning and making the argument regarding this but as I already said a Voip line is going to be much trickier.
