Bad fuel at petrol stations

    have heard some retailers are selling washed disel at the pumps. Apparently some have been caught,and some are selling at the regular price for disel.Is there any way of finding out which stations were selling bad fuel. Do the main garages eg topaz only stock their own fuel, ie is it traceable to a ligitimate source?

    There are 1 or 2 local garages around in my area that are selling diesel cheaper than a major diesel / fuel supplier is selling it direct from their premises .........Id say away from any independant garage selling the cheapest diesel in town.

    Really the best idea is to keep an eye out for the kinda trucks that are delivering to that particular garage. O/T: About 2 years ago a new indie opened up near me, quite a bit cheaper than the Topaz down the street. Got two fill ups from there, and as I was getting less mpg than usual I went back to Topaz and normal mpg resumed. Just assumed it was washed diesel. Last week I was driving past and saw its tanks being topped up by a liveried tanker from a local home heating oil company:rolleyes: That company definitely only does home heating oil, so I'm surprised they haven't been busted yet.

    It's worth reporting them to customs & excise (or whoever is the appropriate authority). Bad for peoples cars and "bad people" tend to be the beneficiaries of any money made.

    the fact that a station uses unbranded trucks or home heating branded trucks has no bearing on the quality or otherwise of the fuel.

    Many fuel companies have disposed of a lot of their fleets and are sub contracting with Portway to deliver their fuel in totally unbranded tankers. Apple Green for example.

    Also home heating rigid tankers are commonly used in instances where a station only wants up to 18,000 liters a rigid holds, and not the 39,000 an artic holds. For example a site may only have a 10k derv tank and a 20k unl tank. So unless some other site in the vicinity needs a smaller delivery as well then the garage can't get a tanker as they operate on full deliveries only for cost reasons.

    Going back to the OPs point. Do not buy any fuel from an independant station (or some Smaller sites) and you will not go far wrong. Buy cheap derv from these places and you will have trouble.

    And if your not sure then ask, all sites must keep records of every single delivery, ask to see their last Schedule 4 Form.

    The branded stations which are all independent companies in their own right are the prefered route to market for laundered diesel . They simply mix it with their normal tanks . Provos are masters at persuading forecourt owners to avail of their services. There is millions of litres laundered every year and very little of it is sold by indy non branded operators actually your probably more likely to get good fuel at the indy sites!

    A Maxol with the approved quality mark or the Esso's and topaz
    applegreens & Texacos run by the companies themselves, which is easy to work out , as there are generally few Irish working in them.

    Branded Indies can be dodgy, all that washed fuel has to go somewhere!

    Was told this first hand by Warranty manager in a big Car Distributor that had to do its own investigations into why a decent customer needed two replacement Diesel engines. Two out of three of his local stations in Cork were dodgy.

    PS Car Distributor sent samples from 3 stations 2 very dodgy. Also this is not just confined to Diesel, Petrol samples have been understrength too recycled thinners added.

    so if i stick with these major players(quality approved)its as good as i can get. ps do the prosecuted garages get publicised.
