Interesting to hear peoples views as to what the turnout will be like for tomorrow's election. The last presidential election in 1997 had a turnout of 47%. Bookmakers ladbrokes are betting on what the turnout will beand bet even money on it being over or under 54%.
That figure looks very high to me considering that none of the candidates would really inspire people to go out and cast a vote for them and also that there has been very little talk in the media of the referendums which will also be be taking place tomorrow. The fact that the election is taking place on a Thursday, rules out the majority of third level students away from home and also many people in the 20-30 age bracket who may be living in other cities around the country. I would think that only a small percentage of these would have gone to the trouble of changing their voting cards to their new address. Adding to this the huge numbers of people who have emigrated due to lack of employment I would think that turnout may well be below the 50 % mark.
Peoples thoughts on this greatly appreciated........
