My gas meter is located inside the house (under the stairs) and I'm thinking of getting it moved to an outside location at the front.

Any chance BG would pay for this (for health & safety & accessibility
to meter reading reasons) or am I pushing a rope up a hill ?

Not a hope. But you can try.

The rule is they are responsable up to and including the meter so if i were you i would hope they move it closer to your boiler.

    Think about it.

where you get that from ?

op ,if you contact the gais bord they should move it for you free of charge . the regs state that it is illegal to have a gas meter under the stairs (actually states an unventilated compartment)
yours was probably installed donkeys years ago and to bring it up to current standards it must go outside (unless you can ventilate ,but most terraced houses cant)
this suits bord gais as they arnt responsible anymore for their gas pipe entering your house , they now responsible up to your meter

when you get your rgi in to service appliances , he should/will/can write you a notification of hazzard if the meter location is not up to current safety standards .
    so there is hope :)

I have come across 2 homes where the meter is under the stairs and the home owners asked for it to be moved and where told that it is acceptable where it is but they can move it for a fee.

It would be interesting OP to see what the out come is, let us know.

You assuming the under stairs is an unventilated void, and the regs do not specify to be ventilated directly to outside, either way, your talking about the gas bord, it also states an ECV should fall safe, yet the tee bar type on most gas meters break their own rules!

thats why i said he could try but to be honest your making my point.. why would he want to. The further back it is the less they are responsable for it. As i said.

But having now read all sides the op can make a choice.
