Hi, just wondering how many ex GW staff do we have on here? I worked in Both the Blanch & Liffey St stores & I can honestly say it was great craic! Did any boardsies work there? Does anyone currently work there? What did they think of it? Have to say it did open my eyes to some of te 'behind the scenes' stuff within GW but it wasn't all bad.

Ok, GW overall were not that good to work for, pay is absolutely dire! For working a Sunday you got an extra €13.00, it was barely minimum wage. The managers I was under had no clue about human resources & were just interested in sales. Kid comes in browsing? Make sure he leaves with a battleforce/battalion box. Was never comfortable with the whole sales ethic; the Blanch store was often used as a Creche by parents who were doing their shopping, explaining to parents that 'no this hobby is not ideal for your 6 year old no matter how advanced you say he is' got a bit tiring though. The hassle a certain manager went out of his way to create with certain members of the Dublin games guild was particularly eye opening to say the least...

You can thank the dream team of the 2002 dublin store for that extra €13. Every single member of staff there took them to court under the organisation of working times act. Payout was in the region of 50-60K, maybe more. Split between the staff there on time worked.

I hated the company, had a ball with the lads i worked with, took the pis$ completely regarding work, never tried to sell anything and they still tell stories in there about us.

Made some goods friends, shouldn't have worked for those wages. Hate them now, and most of the staff are complete tools. Then again since the dream team left that's been the case.

I guess that if you don't like the discount on 40K, the job sucks completely then?

When i was there it was 50% off all stock from the shop, mail order was sold by weight, a kilo of metal or a kilo of plastic was €35. Thats a lot of land raiders or dragons.

I'm in the process of offloading loads of stuff at the moment that i bought all those years ago.

Yes the job was terrible, cleaning the toilet, cleaning windows, dusting all of the boxes, taking off the shelves and washing the walls. In early to sort out the till, staying late to cash up, hoover, re-stock shelves, scrub the painting area. Working 8-10 days in a row depending on roster. All for slightly above minimum wage. Screaming "gifted" kids, christmas was hell.

Enjoyed it though, because of who i worked with, and met a lot of really sound people.

I remember the dream team well! I followed not long after some of them. GW was a great recruitment tool for the civil service at one point! Ah the memories. No idea what the current staff are like as I got barred by the little fella from north of the border after I quit, even if I wasn't I wouldn't go back in. The discount is what kept me there for as long as i was there, that & the craic. Final straw for me was being told I had to work on one of their tournaments in D4 (name of hotel escapes me right now) when I was supposed to be off. So before I left I rang Nottingham for the store reorder; don't think anyone saw so many wood elves & other soon to be obsolete models outside of GW's main warehouse on the UK!

Ha, brilliant to hear that you managed to get something back from them.

Been reading similar threads on other sites over the last few years and you would be surprised to hear that there are lots of ex-GW staff who say the exact same thing about the job (although they didn't manage to claim back anything like you guys did).

Back into the scene in the last month or two, since I have noticed a few familiar faces who I used to buy stuff from in GW (ages ago)playing in Gamers, guessing they would be at least some of the the dream team?

Also what do you guys think about the way GW has gone in the last few years? Most people seem to think they have gone off the rails lately, especially after losing nearly all of its old guard designers, just curious what you think.

More stories would be great, interesting to have a Irish slant on GW shenanigans for once.

The unofficial party in the shop on Xmas eve was the best; the 'manager' had gone hone for hols so we were left to our own devices... Bit tipsy opening the shop up  & only after phone calls & emails were sent to Nottingham because the store was still closed at midday... Closed early & we went across the road to Pravda. Like Woody I quickly hated the place but have some of my best memories of recent years from there. Met some great people, abused the staff discount beyond belief, took f**k all as serious as I could. Slept overnight in the store more than once & I can tell you it's not very comfortable sleeping on a gaming board!!! In the time I left GW has turned into a corporate driven sales machine that has gotten rid of the best of their talent staff wise, if you ever get the chance to get your hands on a copy of White dwarf from the late 80's/early 90's then do so & compare it to the over priced waste of paper that passes for white dwarf today. Good to see you're still knocking about Woody.
