    Hi,

I am thinking of getting an android tablet for our 7 year old. I don't want to spend more than €200 or so. It will be mainly used for games, taking pictures etc...any recommendations or deals that anyone has seen recently?
    Thanks.

Don't let her bring it school etc. Keep it for home use at that age things get dropped in the playground etc.

That was really good advise, but completely not what was requested! :D

I would also like to get recommendations for cheap and cheerful tablets...

The options I think you have are

1: Buy a really cheap one. If it's for a kid it might be broken or she might not even be interested in it. Might be good enough for games photos though.

2: Buy a mid range one like this. http://www.amazon.co.uk/ARCHOS-70-GB-Internet-Tablet/dp/B00422SH5C/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1319622650&sr=8-7
It's light, not too expensive and a decent enough tablet.

3: Keep an eye on adverts.ie. You might save a few quid buying it second hand.

no offence but do you really think a 7yr old deserves a tablet ? why not get them a laptop and have it at home - its still their own computer.

Maybe its just me but ....I see the tablets as a slimline computer and what I think you should ask is ...does a 7yr old need/deserve a computer ?

if you think they do then check bargain alerts - there was mention of a tablet on there recently (if my memory is right)

Personal opinion would be that an ipod touch is probably a better bet then an actual tablet

Thanks for the replies..@pcphoto, I guess I am best to judge what the child needs/deserves but thanks for your input.
I will keep an eye on bargain alerts, was just looking for advice on one to get, not whether should I get one.
    Thanks.

Nobody will dispute that you know whats best for your child, but would a vtech child's computer with proven learning software not be a start.Fun is the name of the game at 7 yrs.

Those vtech things are a total waste. €10 for the screen, €10 for the chip and €100 for the brightly coloured casing. Only to be used for a year and spend eternity in a box in the attic.

At least with Android, or even a small netbook, things can be added and even the components upgraded in some cases. There are millions of Android games and PC games designed for kids, and it can double as a tool for useful things like looking up the web (under supervision, of course) for homework and the like.

Exactly, I stuck Ubuntu on my mother's old laptop and gave it to my sister with a pink vinyl cover on it. Kids will quickly figure out any interface. She got a couple of years out of it using trillian for MSN and playing Penguin Club.

Sister is 15 now and all she uses is Facebook, her current laptop is banjaxed so I'll probably buy her an advent Vega or something for Christmas.

I rarely see kids out playing outside these days, most are cooped up behind computer screens, how is this going to affect their health in say 25 or 30 years, get him a tablet if you want but he would be far better off with a hurley or a football

I got one of these 7" tablets and a USB keyboard/case from a UK seller, to avoid import duties, for about e85. They were doing free post to UK for the tab, and I was going there anyway .... Its not the fastest thing, but its OK. Plays movies fine, wifi isnt fantastic, but its OK for the price.

I think I seen something at komplett.ie for about 90.

I'd keep it away from school too.
