    1) What are the key sessions do you believe have made a difference to the fast marathon times you are pumping out.
    2) What would you consider your specialist distance and why.
    3) In terms of marathon progression what was your first marathon time and how did the improvements come, in chunks or little by little.
    4) What is your diet like.

Thanks for being pushed stepping up to do this :)

    1) Do you think you set the bar too low in Berlin and finished strongly as a result?
    2) How did you get started in running?
    3) What's your fastest 100m time (roughly)?
    4) What type of strength training do you do?
    5) Your 18 month leadup to marathons is unique on these boards, where do you get the patience from, mimicking elites?

    1) What are the key sessions do you believe have made a difference to the fast marathon times you are pumping out.
Have only ran one fastish marathon ;) More miles and longer interval reps (2 mile reps) definitely helped. Throwing in MP miles in longer runs also helped big style
    2) What would you consider your specialist distance and why.

I was handy at the 800 when I was a kid and still like to think of myself as an 800 runner  However at the moment 5k/4 miles are my favourite distances
    3) In terms of marathon progression what was your first marathon time and how did the improvements come, in chunks or little by little.
    3.37 Very unfit and fat.
3.03 6 months later still fat but a little fitter.
2.58 Fitter but ran like an idiot went through half in 1.25
2.54 Solid run, used training to get rid of Winter belly
2.49 One of my best runs. Trained like a deamon but serious headwind in Boston wrecked my chances of going sub 2.40. Was easily in that shape.
2.51 Disaster in Dublin, didn't put the miles in. Ended up in an argument with a couple of traffic cones
2.47 London, was flying until got injured 6 weeks out.
2.48 Madrid, used this to loose another winter belly. Bitch of a course on a scorcher of a day. Made me realised I was pissing around and needed to start training harder for the marathon.
2.36 Good solid training. Nothing spectacular just consistent miles over a consistent period of time
    4) What is your diet like.

Could be better but generally quite good.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,983 ✭✭✭TheRoadRunner

    1) Do you think you set the bar too low in Berlin and finished strongly as a result?
Maybe but just wanted to get the sub 2.40 monkey off my back. Maybe I could have ran 2.34/35 but that pace could have destroyed my day also
    2) How did you get started in running?

In school. Was one of the fastest and while I liked football I had the touch of a rapist
    3) What's your fastest 100m time (roughly)?
    Low 12s. Handheld when I was 13 or 14
    4) What type of strength training do you do?

Eh embarrassed to say this but none. Something I should definitely work on
    5) Your 18 month leadup to marathons is unique on these boards, where do you get the patience from, mimicking elites?

It's not patience really. I get the same buzz from 5km races as I do from marathons.

You struggled in the past with the odd injury with high mileage. What have you changed in the build up to this marathon plan that has change this and allowed you to conduct higher mileage than usual for a longer duration?

    Favourite event?

Mentioned 800m s in passing for next year? Any truth in that?

Since Berlin have you lost a bit of the hunger or are you raring to go again?

What do you feel are the most difficult sessions for you? (either mentally or physically)

You mentioned a couple of times that you ran marathons to get rid of the winter belly.

What sort of training do you do in the winter? Speed work/endurance?

Can you and or do you want to (in terms of commitment) go sub 2.30?

15 minutes of static stretching in the evening before going to bed. I know there is a debate about different stretching types but this worked really well for me, especially my shins. Running twice a day. Broke some of my normal 10 mile runs into 6-4 and moved up to 7-5 over the course of the summer. All nice and easy. Kept the legs fresh as wasn't taking the hit of one 10 mile run. Also helped shift some serious weight. Will try keep this up over the winter but with work and home it will be very tough.
    ecoli wrote: »

women's high/long jump or anything with Jessica Ennis :D Viewing wise probably the 800 or 1500. If I could get fast again the 800 as a race
    ecoli wrote: »

Yep, seriously going to try and give it a lash again. Will have to see how the body responds though so not promsing that you will see me on the track next summer but fingers crossed.
    ecoli wrote: »

Reports of my demise are greatly exaggerated. Raring to go. Needed to take it handy for a while and shake off a few niggles. Legs were also very tired. Didn't realise how much it took out of me. See you in Waterford in December. I'll show ya how hungry I am.
    ecoli wrote: »

long intervals, i.e over a mile. I much prefer the short sharp stuff. They are getting easier over time though.

I hate the Winter, my training has suffered in the past. The last 2 years I've ran quite well during the winter though. Generally just try and get out every day and do mile intervals or 1km intervals. Will try do more this year
    nerraw1111 wrote: »

Can I? yes most definitely. Won't be easy obviously but I have the basic tools. In reality I don't have to change my training much either. More consistency and a little more leg speed

Do I want to? yes definitely but need to work on a bit of leg speed first. Won't do it next year but the following year I'll give it a lash. I've no interest in knocking a minute off my time here and there, I'm going with the all or nothing approach.

JB has already asked what I was going to ask. He always does, lucky guy to think the way I think.

    So;

What do you think would be the key sessions for improving speed endurance?

How many podium places have you had?

Do you do much coaching or do you just like to give shels the ocassional kick in the arse?

What is your favourite flavour of crisps?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,983 ✭✭✭TheRoadRunner

What do you think would be the key sessions for improving speed endurance?
A really good winter base of 70+ miles a week. Early in the new year dropping mileage slightly to 60ish miles while increasing interval sessions. mile reps during the week and tempo at the weekend. Spring Summer dropping mileage slightly again on really concentrating on speed stuff. Mainly 400-600-800-1000 reps but very important to do 200s every now and again. If I'm running track next year I'll be doing lots of 200s and 150s

How many podium places have you had?

Lots when I was younger not so much in recent years and none in any race of significance.
Do you do much coaching or do you just like to give shels the ocassional kick in the arse?

No don't do much coaching. I've never taken any coaching courses so I'd only offer coaching advice to close friends etc.
What is your favourite flavour of crisps?

Cheese and onion. I have a box of 50 of them sitting in my office. Left overs from racepix race. I'm finding it hard to resist.

Long term goals /what you really think you can achieve ( be honest ) ?
Why do you dislike 10km as a distance ?
Most valuable lesson you have learnt bout running thru experience?
    Sweet or savoury ?
Biggest risk to injury and why ?

What has been your greatest ever performance?
I guess Berlin is up there just because I ran it exactly the way I had planned 18 months beforehand.
What is your most memorable race?
800 metres under 16 BLOE national champs. Can still taste the blood in the back of throat to this day :)
Ever thought about doing a triathlon?
Would like to do one but will wait until I can find the time to train properly. I would need to work a lot on my swimming.
If your times ever start to decline, will you be able to keep pushing-on with the same enthusiasm?
Yes may not race as much though. I love running every day and would miss it if I couldn't regardless of pace etc
If you're coming second in a 10k race and the runner in front takes a wrong turn, call them back or push on?
Has happened twice before in races and I've called the guys back. Once I was genuinely in second, the other time I was a little further back. Having said that I ran Belfast with my best mate a few years back. He had to stop for a poo at mile 20 and I ran the 2 fastest miles of that marathon soon after :)
    Real beer or *lite beer?

"Real beer" although my definition of real beer probably wouldn't make it onto your snobby beer radar :)

    2. Do you think that the fact that you were a half decent (or better) runner as a kid, makes it easier for you to turn-in good times now?
    3. Whats the worst injury you have had and the longest break from running?
    4. When will you be a masters runner and will you declare it or still enter as "senior"?

Mark Carroll Ireland's greatest male athlete in my opinion. Have met him a couple of times and he is a very nice chap.
    04072511 wrote: »
    2) What's the worst injury you have had?
Shin splints, very painful and very hard to get rid of. Also had a back injury that was linked to tight hips. Was incredibly painful but once properly diagnosed it cleared up quickly.
    04072511 wrote: »
    3) What's your fastest 400m time?
I have a 53.8 electronic time, I guess that's my official best. I do have 2 high 52s as well though although they were handheld

    4) What is your stance on drug taking in athletics?
I believe all athletes should be clean but I know this is not the case and no matter how hard the authorities try they will always be a couple of steps behind. I do believe things have got better but the cheats are ingenious. I've kind of lost interest in the big golden league meets because of this belief. I'd rather go to the nationals in Santry than watch some of athletic's "superstars".
    04072511 wrote: »

Never done one. I did a 3 legged race down Camden street when I was in college. Had to drink a pint in each pub (there were 5 in all). Total distance was about 800 metres. We came last but still a very respectable 15 minutes. We only found out afterward that the other teams were puking their pints back up, once outside the pub. We kept ours down :o Was a very interesting cycle home later that evening

Hasn't enhanced my training but shows I won't miss training for some bull $hit excuse like forgetting shorts. Don't see the big deal to be honest. Jessica Ennis wears shorts that are bet up her arse. Ecoli wears shorts that leave nothing to the imagination ;) My boxers were nice and big. A bit loose so there was some swingage but it was a cold day so the effects of shrinkage meant it was safe for family viewing.

Not yet but I wouldn't rule it out. A friend of mine ran his fastest 400 metres ever in the nude. May be something I should look into. That would give you all something to talk about.

    5km 15.30
    10km 32.20
    10 mile 52-53 minutes
    half marathon 72 minutes
    marathon sub 2.30

Don't dislike it as much as I use to. Never use to race it properly. WOuld go off too fast and die an awful death. Didn't run a decent 10k until last year when I discovered not to go off at my usual 5 mile pace.

not listeing to your body and common sense. I'm great at dishing out advice but sometimes do meaningless miles just to hit a certain mileage target etc. Have got better with age. Would rather miss 2 days training being cautious then 2 months because of stupidity.

It's kind of sad but it partly defines me. Most people know me as Dave the runner. It puts me in good form and beats the hell out of any drug in the world. I just don't feel right when I'm not running. Had a few years living the life and it's only when I started back running I realised how much I missed it.

    1) How fast do you think you can get in the marathon?
2.2X territory. Not too sure exaactly but I'm willing to find out in the next 2 years.
    2) How many interval workouts would you do in a week (not base training)?
2 at most, even then I might only do 1. I find it hard to recover after intervals. It's just something I've come to realise over the years. The benefit I get from them is huge though
    3) How long do you train specifically for the marathon (e.g. after base training is complete, how many weeks would you train towards one specific goal race)?
Use to do 18 weeks but that is too long for me. I get bored or injured. 12 weeks is my new approach. However at week 1 I would want to be in pretty good shape so I can hit the plan running.
    4) How do you keep real life and running separate, especially when you're running twice a day?
Impossible really, just have to fit it in. I'm lucky that I can run most lunch times and have flexible hours normally so I can stretch an hour to 80 minutes. Running again in the evening can cause hassle at home so I kill 2 birds with 1 stone and bring the dog out with me. Her fitness has increased dramatically over the last 6 months.
    5) Would you prefer a win in an 800 or a marathon?
hmmmm depends on the field winning time etc. No interest in winning races where I wouldn't be pushed or winning it at a canter. You'll have to put more parameters on that question for me to answer it.

I don't know it's a very hard question to answer. It's easy to say that with proper training everybody could run sub 3. I genuinely believe that a lot of people could break this barrier but I know some can't either, because they'll get injured etc. For me personally a sub 2 minute 800 would be waaaaaaayyyyy harder than a sub 3hr marathon. The flip side of that is some guys could naturally bang out a sub 2 without breaking sweat. Check out Niall Niall Tuohy's blog, don't know the guy but it's an interesting read. He has awful problems with injuries but has incredible natural speed and runs sub 1.50s off very little mileage/training.

I can't see it not helping. However it's not a major disadvantage some of the lads on this board have come late to running (heffsarmy, tunguska, krusty etc) and are flyers
    dna_leri wrote: »

A year and a bit, well I'll be 35 then. Will probably declare it but have no interest in vet prizes/champs etc. I'd rather compare myself to those around me regardless of age.

Yeah I wish I had of done a 2 handed windmill. No regrets sometimes I wish I had of competed a bit more in my early 20s, sometimes think of them as lost years. The flip side of that though is I could have lost interest and not be running now so I'm happy with my lot.

As in easyish pace? around 7 min pace. More miles and working on form during intervals should help increase cadence. I have an awful running style though so am not really qualified to give advice.
    Pet hates in running folk?

People lying about injuries on the start line and then kicking your ass.

Since you have returned to the sport have you always done your own plan or have you had any help from any coaches?

    Advantages/disadvantages to training yourself?

How often do you train with your club? Do you feel obligated to run races for the club or just do your own thing and fit in their races when it suits you?

Would you ever push the kids into the sport or are you hoping the would find it on there own?
I'd never push anyone in anything especially athletics. It can be a very hard and lonely sport at times. I'd really hope they were into some sort of sport though. The physical state of alot of children these days is atrocious. If they didn't like sport I'd try to find some sort of physical activity that they like. Having said that I'd love if my little fellah was into running. I bring him to as much races as I can hoping he catches, the monkey see monkey does attitude. If it's not for him than fair enough.

Since you have returned to the sport have you always done your own plan or have you had any help from any coaches?
In the main yes. In reality it was not a good move. I take advice from 2 people now. I usually run my plan by them and we tweak it were necessary. They know me well and what works for me so I trust their advice.

    Advantages/disadvantages to training yourself?

There are many but overall you can't go wrong with finding a good coach who you trust. Major disadvantages of training myself is sometimes I don't push myself hard enough. Other times I push too hard. That's why I keep a detailed paper log and run it by the 2 lads mentioned above. They can tell me to get the finger out or ease back.

How often do you train with your club? Do you feel obligated to run races for the club or just do your own thing and fit in their races when it suits you?
Not very often but that is due to family commitments at the moment (not that you'd care you family hating bastard). I use to train with them twice a week when I could get down. I'll always run for the club if asked. Can be a bit annoying though as sometimes there seems to be no long term goal races and you just hear about them at short notice. Maybe if I was down in the club more often I'd hear about them!

    1500

Favourite elite athletes training log? or do you follow any?
I don't follow many but I use to enjoy Thomas Chamney's. He is so honest and it gave you a great insight into the work required to become an Olympian. He is also incredibly blunt and pulls no punches about particular athletes he thought were cheats. I really admired this. He has scaled his blog back a good bit now though.

I know I know. I'll never forget the time I went to Maine road to see them play Milwall in what was the 3rd tier of football at the time. Got the **** kicked out of me and had to make a run for my life.

Feed the Goat and he will score :)

    5) Would you prefer a win in an 800 or a marathon?
hmmmm depends on the field winning time etc. No interest in winning races where I wouldn't be pushed or winning it at a canter. You'll have to put more parameters on that question for me to answer it.

Let's say winning the Cork marathon, which is usually won in a time around 2:25, or winning an equivalently stacked 800? Which one would you prefer?

    Probably the marathon.

How do you handle different stages of the marathon? The importance of starting at the right pace etc?

Best advise you could give a newbie (18 months running) on improving their speed. Types of sessions etc?? Currently 1:42:xx half aiming for 3:45 DCM.

Typical breakdown of diet/meals on any given day during training?

    Tevez or Balotelli?

Ever been to any of their grounds? :D I thought Elland Road was bad, watching Leeds lose to Hereford is one of the lowest points in my life.

I hate the start, just want to get the first 10 miles out of the way. I wanted to drop out at 2 miles in Berlin this year, sounds mental but that's where my head was at.

I love when you get to 20 miles. This is the point where you enter the unknown. You can train for 20 miles onwards but it's hard to replicate what is going to happen in the last 6 miles. Pace at start is so important. Tunney made a great point before about people hitting the wall, generally if you've hit the wall you've gone off too fast, simple as.

Run and train for 5ks. 400s,800s,1ks. 10 * 400 metres is a great session to start off with. Do lots of fartlek. Run with people who are faster than you even if it is there easy day, they will drag you around.

Breakfast: large bowl of porridge, low fat yoghurt, 2 pieces of fruit
    mid morning: fruit or scone
Lunch: 3 pieces of bread filled with chicken/turkey or ham. Fruit, low fat yoghurt.
Dinner: Pasta or rice dinner usually. Don't really like spuds although I do eat them 1-2 times a week.
late evening: Pineapple, great for soothing a sweet tooth

Tevez, although he is a bollox. I thought Ferguson was mad to let him go but it makes sense now.

    1. Biggest scalp taken?
    2. Best ass(female) you have run after in a race?
    3. When did you relax in Berlin knowing that you would come inside target?
    4. How much of your improvments over the last year are down to drinking good quality cheap beer.

Gebrselassie, he heard I was starting to motor in Berlin and dropped out through fear ;) I don't know really and if I did I wouldn't name them. Would be like drawing a big target on my own back.

I have recently discovered my wife has a boards.ie account and has seen some of my posts. I would never objectify the fairer sex :pac:

Always felt strong and in control but started to get small doubts around 10-15 miles when I could feel hamstring tighten. A couple of miles later when I upped pace slightly it eased out and I knew I should be ok. Really knew it was in the bag at 37K. My Dad has a great photo of me giving the big thumbs up.

Ah the special B. It really is fantastic stuff. All joking aside a reduction in overall alcohol consumption has definitely helped. Still have beers most week, usually restricted to one night a week now though and nothing too excessive normally. Having said that you seen the slab of beer I purchased earlier this evening. They have just about reached perfect cooling temps. Time to party me thinks :)

What's your strategy for DCM on Monday? Go out at 6 min/mile and pick up the pace from the 10 mile marker? Think you can get 'em in under 2:55? :)

Some of the plans he was talking about today were very good if they happen....

I'd be lynched. 6.50 the whole way. Main goal is to finish under 3hrs with balloon stick in tack.

I'm also hoping to convince any runners around me to break into the one handed windmill with 100 metres to go. would be great if I could get 10 people to do it :)

My clubmate Dave is heading off with your group so keep an eye out for him.

Watch out for the low hanging branches in the park, one of the sub 3hr balloons went pop along there last year.
