No receipts for medical claim

    Quick query here.

I apply for medical expenses from the revenue every year. I recently got a letter from revenue asking me for receipts. I do not have receipts as this is going back few years from appointments etc.

They said they are withdrawing income tax relief from me. What does this mean? I am hoping to start a job soon. When I get my paycheck will they take it all out in one go?

If this is the case. If I set up a new bank account with another bank and use those details for my new job. The revenue will have different bank account details but will still have my pps number etc... Will this stop them from taking money from my account?

    Cheers in advance!

Go find your receipts .....They are free of charge from most doctors , chemists / hospitals .

Should only cost you the price of a postage stamp to request , and surely you used mainly the same ones each year .

It is always best to use the same pharmacy / doctor if at all possible ( for tax purposes )

You are supposed to keep the receipts for 6 years

It means they are going to disregard the amounts claimed and treat your return as if they didnt exist, so you ll owe them money

Once the amended assessment (P21) issue you will owe them the money immediately. It's up to you to organise how its paid over

However as said above if you contact your doctor and chemist they should be able to give you reports for what you paid and when. This will suffice.

The above poster was only being helpful and telling you how to avoid having the relief withdrawn.

Maybe my post above sounds a bit overly sensitive , but there is no point in shooting the messenger .

If you want to ease the burden in your own situation , it is best to follow all of the advice above .

If you are unable to produce receipts , then communicate with tax office , and they may reduce your tax credits to a reasonable amount to re-coup the overpayment .( will depend on the amounts involved and other circumstances )

    Thanks lads,

Didnt mean to be harsh in my post. Wasnt meant that way.:o

I was just a bit worried because I am starting a new job next week and when the letter said they would withdraw income tax relief from me I thought they would take it out of my next paycheck.

From what you are saying here, does this mean they cant take money from my bank account when I get my first paycheck? It will be up to me to pay them the money and not them taking money from my bank account without my permission?

    Cheers!

Depending on the amounts they could alter your tax credits to collect the money before you get paid

No they won't take money from your account.

As J.Ryan says they may alter your tax credits but its more likely that they ll give you a few weeks/month to pay then issue a final demand.

If you get a demand for underpaid tax and don't have the funds to pay it within the 14 days specified then contact Revenue and arrange with them over what period you can pay it.

As far as I know Revenue only take money from your bank account when you sign a single debit authority, otherwise I see how they would even know whether you have a bank account.
