Yeah, think there was a thread about this guy some time ago. Best of luck to him, can't see him achieving his goal in just a year though. Must have a lot of time on his hands! I'd be lucky to get out once a month.

Think it is impossible to do in a year, a mate of mine has gone from 18 to 1 in 4 years has has loads of lessons a great swing to start with and time and money have not been a problem. Has been attempted loads of times and i think there is a guy who wrote a book about it but he changed his mind and set his goal of shoot par inside a year which is a much more realistic goal.Mike

Michael - I presume it's yourself that has posted this as the OP ?

It's a good challenge but I don't think that you have a hope in hell of getting anywhere near scratch in a year. I would say that you could get down to single figures at a stretch but fair play to you if you can achieve even this. I will be delighted if you prove me wrong though.

Look forward to reading about your struggle though ! We should dedicate this thread now to doing a small prediction on what handicap you will actually down to in a year.

Didnt this fella previously start his one year a good while ago?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 84 ✭✭mikemanley

yes i started it but an injury and lack f playing stopped it before it even started plus this is a better time to start as i will get all of the good weather at the right time. Thanks for the feedback but if you have anything negative to say just dont bother saying anything i dont mind criticism or advice but please no negative comments. If anybody fancies a game i will be more than happy to play. Just in from my first round today, going out later for another nine maybe. Thank god i picked the right day to book off work :). Will post details of both rounds on the blog tonight

You should be on the course practising, not on here looking for positive-only comments!

When do we get to see how you got on yesterday?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 240 ✭✭Deco1983

It might help if you posted your current handicap on the wordpress site?

Other things you should think about are:

Videos of your swing on you tube, before after during the year
    Set some goals
    Talking Head interviews
    Links to actual Scorecards
    Facebook Twitter etc

Basically you'll need to make it more interesting to keep peoples attention

Also your style of writing on the blog is difficult to read tbh and you may want to look at it

    Best of luck with it

:) i gotta eat. I didnt finish work until five yesterday so i only got to the range practiced off the tee mostly ie: driver, 3 wood and hybrid. My 3 wood just isn't for me i didn't carry it in the bag today as i cant hit it. i will post today's scores and a review later while watching the footy. The guy i was playing with is a handy player so he showed me a few things. My friend that i play with the most got to scratch in 2 years so im hoping with his help you'd never know. This challenge is for myself but thought would share it here as i love reading the topics here so just another topic for people to read.

Best of luck OP, if you are genuinely starting from zero and hope to get to scratch then I'm all for positive thinking, in all fairness the negative vibes should be ignored, give the lad a chance!
I think the poll on what you will end up as is a great idea, I'd also amend this thread title.
Again, best of luck OP, go for it!!!!

looks like Michael also read the novice2scratch blog.

From novice2scratchblog "I have what is known as an addictive personality. This does not mean my personality is addictive, unfortunately. It means I quickly and easily become addicted."

From newbie2scratch blog "I have what is known as an addictive personality. This does not mean my personality is addictive, Unfortunatly. It means i quickly and easily become addictive."

Good luck Mike although I have to admit being stumped. If you say today that you'd be happy to shoot around the 100 mark how on earth did you get assigned a h/c of 12, which would suggest you shot a mid 80s round on one of your three submitted cards? No?

    Thats a fair point!

Can we ask what the 3 scores were on the handed in cards. It would be very unfair to hand you 12 starting off if the scores were not great..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 84 ✭✭mikemanley

my three cards were a 94, 92 and a 86. I have only broken 90 on two occasions that been one. Since then i have got lessons and swing has changed so im still adjusting to the changes i shot a 94 today so was happy enough will have details of that round up in next while. I wasn't expecting a handicap like that was expecting more of a 18 or 19. I thought it averages out as well so i dont know how they averaged mine to be 12

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,645 ✭✭✭k.p.h

Did you play the 86 with the h/c secretary ..?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 84 ✭✭mikemanley

Yeah people tell me that why. Was just one of them days that everything went right, will have the scores from today posted on golf score in the next five minutes if you want to check them out you will find the link in the contact tab

its not negative and its not feedback !

what it IS, is a piss take, simples !

I do wish you the best of luck in your quest but TBH with some of the stuff Ive been reading here, Im starting to get a little suspicious
Youve never played as such before, and you get a 12 H/C straight off the bat :confused:
those 3 rounds also dont look like the kind of rounds a total beginner puts in either !

anyways, best of luck with it !

How many times does a 12 handicapper need to shoot level par to get to scratch?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 84 ✭✭mikemanley

They were my first rounds of golf i think i played pitch and putt in the summer time with a few friends but nothing serious, also played one or two games here and there alot of my friends are low handicappers with one been off scratch and another off 3 so when your with them on the course you learn alot. I'm not saying you don't believe i only start playing in the summer but those that don't i don't really care tbh.

Haven't checked that out yet hopefully some one here can answer this Q. Just a quick rules Q i was playing today and my ball plugged in behind the hazard line but if it didn't plug it would have been playable is it a shot penalty or should i have got a free drop? Thanks

Too many to do in a year.. Once you get to cat 1 you have to shoot pretty much under you h/c every time because of the weighting. And the buffer is only 1 shot.

I think the only way you could even word a challenge like this is to shoot a Par or better round in a year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 84 ✭✭mikemanley

K.P.H do you think it is a more realistic target to shoot a level par round in a year opposed to becoming a scratch golfer. In a way i thought both were the same because if you were to shoot level par does your handicap not match your latest round ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,645 ✭✭✭k.p.h

No mike, their is a weighted system in place to calculate handicaps. It's designed to make competitions fair. So you h/c is only adjusted on qualifying competitions.

You are currently a Cat 2 handicap 12. So if you shoot a +10 round you have shoot 2 shots better than you h/c. So you h/c is then adjusted -(2 x 0.2) which would make you a 11.6 h/c.

If you shoot over +12 ( and the buffer zone which is calculated on the css )you h/c gets adjusted up by 0.1. Link below and if you search here on boards it is explained better else where.

    http://www.handicapmaster.org/handicaps/Unified_Handicapping_System_Page2.php

I think you would be much better aiming to shoot Par as the maths make it almost impossible to become scratch in a year. Also maybe be best to set an intermediate goal of shooting sub 80.

Also I don't think you will manage it, but that dose not mean I think it is a bad idea to try. :)

    Got there before me kph.

I reckon even to go from 5.4 to scratch you'd have to get cut 50 0.1s. While obviously technically possible to get more than 0.1 per competition it would still likely mean entering over 30 or 40 counting competitions and shooting about +2 or better in every one of them ... And that's just to get from 5.4 to 0.4!!!! Take another 30 or 40 comps to get from 12 to 5.4 and you just run out of time. None of this takes into account the fact that almost every golfer sees their handicap actually INCREASE in about a third or more of the competitions entered. Sorry mike but you may need to start reviewing the situation!

I had the handicap system all wrong then some older guy i was playing with try to explain it to me aswell the way he put it across was that what ever you shoot over par was your handicap

  • Subscribers Posts: 4,419 ✭✭✭PhilipMarlowe

A level par round (or better) is certainly a more realistic target because you'd need to play really well in a lot of competitions to get chopped in handicap. Also, your handicap won't change at all until qualifying competitions start up, sometime around the end of March.
Even assuming you shot a level par round of 71 @ Gowran in the March Medal off the blues, your 12.0 would likely get cut to 9.2 (assuming CSS of 73).
Another 71 gross in a singles off the whites might then get you to 7.4
So you see that it takes time to be cut... and when you hit category 1 (5 or below) you get cut even less for a good day at the office. I'm not saying it can't be done - just that you'd need a serious amount of excellent golf, not just one or two very good days.

Regarding your handicap, you got 12.0 from yours truly in June because of the cards you handed in. I don't remember playing a round with you (maybe it was one of the other secretaries?) and I don't have your cards here to hand but I do remember that one of them was a good bit better than the other two. Also, when corrected down for bad holes, your 86 would have become an adjusted 83. The SSS off the whites is 71 so 83 - 71 = a differential of 12 and you got awarded 12.0 exact. Had your other 2 cards been a bit better, you may have got 11.5 :) But I allowed that scope to go out to 13 quicker in case you struggle off 12.

Its not just an old and meaningless saying, but it does pay to do your homework before taking on a new venture:)
