No seat belts in the back, and seats actully removed.

It is legally a van, although not the most practical van.

Won't that run foul of the law anyway unless you use it only as a commercial?
Can't see that going onsite with tools in the back, also it hasn't got chipboard installed!

If you can persuade your local Co. Council to tax it comercially then you're away.

    Council decide taxation status.

Plod has only to determine that vehicle is taxed and displaying correct disc. Whether its commercial/private whatever is not in their remit.

There seems to be a bit of confusion here vis trade plates...

It's not even a new law/rule, you were never supposed to be able to just use something commercially taxed as a private car, you could just get away with it, but it's supposedly being enforced more strictly now.

This could of been converted to a "van" if it was imported to avoid paying vrt.

Stroke of genius to be honest, instead of paying €1293 tax per year the owner has been paying €288

There's a few Nissan 350z's around with commercial tax!! Wouldn't mind one of them myself it'd just kill me to pay full rate on a 3.5 litre.

There are several 2 seater sports cars with hatch backs registered as commercial in Ireland, GTO/3000gt, supra, 300zx, 350z etc can all very simply and legally be classed as a van, just as much as a ford focus or opel astra can.

Its the using it as a private vehicle and paying commercial tax thats the legal issue.

All the questions you will be asked at check points when the garda notices your 3L sports car taxed as a commercial lol. Bringing that in for it's Doe every year the testers will think your taking the piss. Probably fail on every single anything just to make life hard for ya getting cheap tax on a motor like that :D

Who said anyting bout stopin at checkpoints?! All jokin aside they'd probably make life tuff alrite- it's all about the money tho, between 9 & 1200 import tax depending if u call it a fairlady or 300zx then there's the tax issue, let's just say I've no intension a payin €1100 or wat ever it is!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,140 ✭✭✭alanmc

I've no intention of not paying full fat tax on my Z. I might not like it. I might not even agree with it. But I'm content in the fact that if I get stopped at a checkpoint, there will be no chance of my pride and joy being taken away from me.

It is a large amount of cash to have to fork out year after year, but it's a lot of car. I almost don't mind paying it ;)

    Oh no thats not mine!

But I do drive a converted car :) something a lot less exotic :pac:
    • Out with the rear seats and replace with a false floor
    • Remove rear seatbelts
    • Weld up the bolt holes
    • Black out the windows (or replace with fibreglass panels)
    • Use commercial tyres
    • Carry a warning triangle

    Engineers report!

Get it weighed at a council weigh bridge

Get the tax office to gawk at it

DOE it then tax it :)

^^ you don't need commercial tyres unless you somehow increase the load capacity of the vehicle.

Carvan type commercial vehicles, opel astra/ford focus etc, use the same tyres as the passanger car models.
