there is a massey 35 3 cylinder beside me that i plan on buying. the owner doesnt know how much to ask for it. it needs two new wings, new foot plates and all painting,it has a sekura cab in good condition with doors all glass and the canvas cover at back. here lies the problem,;) it has been dry stored for the last 6-9 years and he last started it about 3 years ago and it has a knocking sound from the engine.(big end bearings)??? would anyone know how much it would cost to fix this or how much a total rebuild is. would 1800 sound right the way it is at the minute

Its probably worth 3500 in mint condition, so work backwards from that. The silly money left with the Tiger.

Knocking sound could be a 'diesel knock' caused by injector blockage or possibly fuel timing. Might not need a total strip down. Realistic price for that machine would be €1000 - €1200 IMO

its something im thinking about,i think you can get a rebuild kit for around 300. trouble is the man wanted to know how much a rebuild would cost,1200 i was told so now he wants to know how much a total restoration would cost, take away how much tractor would be worth and that is the price

It's very satisfying rebuilding an engine, did a V8 earlier this year, first one I've done :D

Total nut & bolt restoration is a money pit on any vehicle though, it's a labour of love, you won't make a profit!

Making a usable tractor that won't win a concours event or get you in a magazine is a different matter, my brother in law has rebuilt a 35X that still works hard in his landscaping business running rakes etc, it's lighter and more manoeuvrable than his Renault Celtis (and more reliable )

At least it's like a Land Rover, plentiful cheap spares and well documented. Classic Tractor magazine did a full rebuild on one a few years back, you can probably get a reprint.

Useful info here, plenty more if you google

Missed the original point, what's it worth

Sounds like he has high expectations, offer him the 1000 - 1200 Bob suggests and walk away. There will be plenty more around.
