at least one of each anyhow

the optical works best with smouldering fires and is less affected by steam and false alarm

ionization works best with fast flaming fires

Yea mixed seems the most positive way, but for domestic, either is easily good enough to perform their life saving function. The optical is said to be less prone to false alarm alright.

The optical seems to be the preferred alarm for most locations

unless theres risk of fast flaming fire or dust

but at least one of each

so i reckon from what your saying ionisation for the landing

    and photoelectric for living room

thats sounds right for them type of fires and the effects that they may have

is it a common thing to fit different types of smoke detectors?

I think the ionization may be cheaper

i reckon for LD2 i think it is
    on 3 bed semi
prob 1 heat 2 opt and 1 ion

im working on my aunts house at the min

    upstairs

    2 bed
    1 bath
    1 sq meter landing

    downstairs

    living rm/ entrance
    diner/kitchen

only a small house so i was putting 1 heat detector in the kitchen/diner

    smokie in the living room

and 1 smokie in the landing,

whats the rules as regards to the attic??????

is that not the heighest point of the building?
couple of my lecie friends couldnt tell me either, 1 only said if the attic was converted it should have a smokie

    none in standard attic
but 2 opt + heat downstairs
and smoke on landing i would say

is 2 opt + 1 heat a guide line as there is really only 2 rooms down stairs, no hallway

    entrance/living room - smokie

    kitchen/dining room - heat detector

both room are not even 25m sq

You can use either type, there will be little difference or advantage in either type for a domestic setup. Heat for kitchen, and either type smokes for anywhere else.

Prob one of every type so

    heat opt ion

I think the opt is preferred over ion in living areas because of false alarms and they work faster with likely fires in these
    areas
