Perhaps a silly question, but is there a media blackout for the Presidential Election from the day before polling day, similar to the one for a General Election?

I have election fatigue. We need a month now without seeing any of the candidates... well, except the winner. Its been a long long run in.

There has been about 9 debates and i'm none the wiser after them all.

After the 58 debates we've learned that SF haven't forgotten how to ambush, but not much else.

No ambush needed...Mr Gallagher(FF) dug a whole of rancid proportions, fell in and now is desperately trying to dig himself out...just like Bertie. Deny, offer unbeliveable half explanations...only the really gullible would folow this unethical "failed entrepreneur" :(. Dont fancy any of the candidates but SG is bottom of the heap.

Yep, it started from 2 o'clock. Just when it was starting to get interesting.

Yes but only in the broadcast media. I support it because voters have a right to a period of reflection before making their decision. Furthermore, I am sickened by the media's hounding of most of the the candidates except Michael D. The way Norris was treated was disgraceful. Dana was denigrated for being religious. Gallagher is being demonised just because he used to be a fundraiser for FF even though all parties do exactly the same thing. Mary Davis was called a "quango queen" and remarks were made about her appearance on billboards, despite the fact that she was only paid for 3-4 of her positions. I have yet to hear Michael D being treated to tough questioning from any of the media, such as about the tax-amnesty when he sat at Cabinet.

They build you up so they can pull you down. Like Lisbon, the Dublin 4 media have decided how we "must" vote. Dev used to say to know how the Irish people think he had only to look inside his heart. The Dublin 4 media thinks that to find out how the Irish people should think, they only have to do the same!

"Gallagher said there was nobody who would find anything in his business dealings which was "anything but above board". well this is about values and ethics , something SF know little about. Gallaher has not answered:
    1. why did he not repay the Louth CEB, as a former Ass CEO he would know exactly the legal status of pref shares
    2. Why did he est Smarthomes doing the same business/ same directors if it was not to avoid repaying his debts
    3. The taxpayer had to foot the bill to bring him to the steps of the Court to get a settlement-
    4. Why did he threathen the non paid Board memebrs for defamation- what good name/ character has he to defend ? What were the costs to the taxpayer ?
a whole list of questions swill around the SG tent- but I suppose his supporters think its ok to use the Aras brown envelopes if he gets elected?
Im non political and support noone candidate but I do respect the office of President but no more if SG gets elected.

Come on everyone - wake up! Michael D Higgins is a puppet and old. He is already drawing pensions of over €80k. If elevted Ireland will be the laughing stock of the world. Martin McG, a member of the IRA, a terrorist organisation. Sean, once a member of FF. A political party that saw Ireland through difficult times. Was it FF fault that the world banks got into trouble? NO. They tried to get us out of it. FG and Labour critisie them but hang on, when in power they are doing the same. Come budget day you will all remember!. Sean is also a businessman. There are thousands corrupt businessmen. What is being said about him is not criminal. He is a decent man who gave employment to hundreds. Think about it real hard. Michael D - joke, Martin IRA, Mitchell - FG Budget, Dana - joke, Mary D - joke, Norris - where are the letters? and Sean - the man. I am not political, just thinking about our country - only Sean for me, Vote Sean No 1 and be thankful you did.

I think it was Ahern who introduced the moratorium to suit himself. I do not agree with it at all as voters should be informed as much as possible up to voting day.

I respect Michael D but his outbursts at American foreign policy would be disasterous for American investment were he to get in.

It's a shame we rely so heavily on the yanks. Because Michael is completely right about their foreign policy, it stinks.

I hope some people don't go in an put 1 on the vote of their choice only.

TODAY, FOR only the second time since 1938, a presidential election will ultimately be determined by the second, third and fourth preferences cast by voters. Our new president will by no means necessarily be the candidate favoured by the largest number of voters.
Or, to put it another way.
For only the second time in those 12 presidential elections will “plumpers” – voters who don’t vote down 2,3,4, beyond their No1 – potentially forgo the chance to determine who is and who is not elected. Every preference may count, and every opportunity declined to use a vote effectively, to vote through the list, may also tell in what promises to be a knife-edge election.

The ultimate winner today will be the candidate who garners enough second, third and even fourth preferences.
And voters who want to do everything they can to ensure a specific candidate is not elected should use their vote as effectively as possible, by placing a 7 opposite their most disliked candidate and 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 opposite the others in whichever order appeals.

I can see a point to discussion of the candidates, but you can't really discuss early poll tallies (in my opinion) as it can shape the course of the election. People who are ahead, their supporters might go 'well, needn't bother voting so' and another candidates supporters might win the day because they bothered turning up.
