    Hi.

Im not looking for medical advice only want to know other people's past experience, but in Aug 10 i tore my ACL in my right knee, i also had cartilage damage, i had surgery in Nov 10 (which was a success) and did all the rehab, i finally returned to sport after 8months and tole the ACL in my left knee and also alot of cartilage damage and other stuff, PT said it was the worst MRI result he ever seen, did alot of damage, i had surgery last wk and got a new ACL like last time using hamstring graft, but they could not fix the cartilage so they had to remove it all, the surgeon said i will never play any contact sport again, just swimming or cycling. im going bk in 2 weeks to meet him, anyone else know what happens when u have no cartilage, im Googling it and what im getting back is a total knee replacement, can any1 inform me of their experiences with this injury.

    Regards

Oh wow, to be honest I've no idea how to deal with this thread, I can't see how it's specific to GAA sports, I also don't like the idea of sharing medical experiences/advice, but seeing as it's your first post (welcome btw) I'll leave the thread open for now.

AFAIK you may lose some stability and cushioning in the joint - I had a small tear that didn't need surgery, but I did a lot of googling about it!

If you are googling it, then google meniscus removal or meniscectomy, generally if people refer to torn cartilage in the knee, the name of the cartilage is the meniscus, might help you find better answers

Sorry to hear about the injuries, sounds very bad!

    Hi,

Ruptured my ACL and had cartilage damage also. Have played contact sports since (mainly GAA and some rugby). Was told by the surgeon that I may get arthritis in the knee later in like. Sounds like your injury is more severe.

Did the consultant specifically say that it was due to the cartilage damage that you would no longer be able to play contact sports? Also what is the "other stuff" you are referring to? Lateral/medial ligament, bone damage other soft tissue damage?

I tore cartiledge in my right knee in the summer. I was bad for the first few weeks. My knee was locking and all but it gradually improved. I think I will stay away from surgery

I tore my acl (complete) about 4 weeks ago and am having surgery. I injured it in rugby and i want to try and return for cup rugby next year. Don't know if you know but do you think this is possible. If all goes well i want to be doing high level of rugby by next christmas. I'm only in fifth year so i don't know much about it and doctors have not really given me a straight answer as to weather i will be able to play serious competitive rugby. Is it realistic to be aiming for this.

    Thanks

Sorry to hear that, i returned to sport after tearing my right ACL, and i did my other leg (acl and cartilage), But my right leg is perfect now, the operation is the easy part, make sure to do all you rehab on it, rehab is the success to returning to sport , give yourself the time to recover, dont rush it.

Me i went back to see my surgeon last week and i can never play contact sport again, he removed 80% of my cartilage, but ACL reconstruction was a success. There is a change i could get Osteoarthritis in knee which means ul have to get a total knee replacement, but ill jump that bridge when i get there, might not be for another 20 years, ive youth on my side do am "only" 24.

Best of luck with your surgery!:D
