Thanks for reading and for any advice.
A warning light came on in my 2006 Volvo S40 1.6 yesterday. It has 88K miles and was last serviced 6K ago with timeing belt etc.
Saw my mechanic today and he plugged it into his computer which told him that the DSF was low on fluid.
He told me that he couldn't reset the device as it could only be done at a Volvo dealership and the the fluid was 70 euro per litre and he didn't know how many litres the car might need.
He was to find out and ring me back but I've had a quick look online and found 1 litre of the stuff in the UK for £26 and 4.5 litres for £92 incl VAT.
Has anybody bought this fluid at a post Celtic Tiger price? Does anyone know a mechanic/garage who would have the computer to reset the unit once its been corrected?
    Thanks for any help!

That Volvo seems to have the Peugeot diesel engine and it usually requires the fluid about every 70k - 80k miles. The Peugeot takes 2 litres. The fluid is dangerous stuff and it's recommended to wear double rubber gloves when handling it. I don't think I would try a DIY job with stuff bought online in this case. I suggest that you shop around between Volvo, Ford, Peugeot, Citroen and Mazda dealers (all use the same engine) for the best price. I suspect that one of them will do the job for the cost of the fluid, €140.

The fluid can be found online at www.clickcarparts.co.uk
My mechanic knows a fellow who can help, quoted me 300 euro for the fluid, the labour and resetting the unit. The main volvo dealer in Dublin suggested that I should get a whole new filter at a cost of 1200 plus labour...........wonder why?;)

That site is certainly offering a keen price, although it seems to be an alternative fluid rather than the Peugeot Citroen type. I think it would be OK to use it. However to re-echo the caution in my first post I see they also give the following warning:
The JLM PAT fluid Diesel Particulate Filter Cleaner, can only be added by an official mechanic into a special DPF reservoir mounted under your car and is suited especially for cars with PSA engines (Citroen/Peugeot etc).

    (The underscore is mine)

On Peugeot/Citroens a filling kit comes with the 3 litre topup..its pretty straight foward to to up,the fluid is not so nice of stuff so gloves will be required when topping up.
The last topup i did on a citroen the 3 litre additive/filling kit cost around
    €120-€130.
You just need someone with a good level diagnostic equipment to reset the system...this should be done for less that €50 or so.
As for replacing the dpf volvo will recommend replacing it but if your filter is clean (diagnostic check )it should be fine for another 20-30k...:)
