2 months notice

    I was offered a job with another company which I accepted. They want me to start asap but my notice is 2 months long. I told them I would ask to get the notice shortened. What's the best way to get my notice reduced, If I tell them I'm leaving regardless in a month what can they do, I just won't get a good reference. Just to point out I have the job regardless but the 2 month nitice is a massive nuisance for the company Ill be joining as they need me starting asap.

    Also I'll be a about 600 euro worse off by staying 2 months rather than one month due to higher wages in new job.

    Do you have a good rapport with your boss in your current job? Will they be stuck if you leave before 2 months, or will you have enough time to hand over to another colleague (it might not be enough time to hire someone new for you to train). I have a crazy notice period in my job and not looking to leave at the moment, but I hope when the time comes that I can negotiate down.

    I'm entry level so don't see how they would need more than a few weeks to fill the position, a monkey could do it.

    Just tell them you're leaving. Don't mention notice unless they mention it to you. Chances are your direct manager doesn't even realise what it says in your contract.

    Is my understanding correct that legally despite any contract you may have with your employer your notice period is linked to the frequency of your pay?

    So if you are paid monthly the "legal" notice period is 4 weeks.

    That's minimum notice you're talking about.
    You are bound to any notice period stated in your employment contract.

    I don't think so:
    Statutory minimum notice
    If you do not have a provision in your contract of employment dealing with notice, the statutory minimum notice of one week will apply and this is the notice that you should give your employer of your intention to leave. The statutory minimum notice of one week, is set down in Section 6 of the Minimum Notice and Terms of Employment Act, 1973.
