Wouldn't mind buying one of these, I always seem to need one and it would be handy to have.

I'd only want something for personal use, does anyone have one? How much are where did you get it?

Looking for something that would cover a general range of cars.

I have a generic obd2 scanner. It's the 16pin connection but most post 2002 cars have this connection. You'll need to *find* some decent software to go with it. I've used it on a few cars and it's never had a problem, though it doesn't read airbag faults.

We have Launch x431 in work but I'm sure you don't want to spend that much lol

If you just want something to read and clear codes and you've an Android phone, I'd recommend getting Torque Pro. Pick up a bluetooth OBDII adapter (I got this one from DX) and you're good to go.

    Seriously? As easy as that?

I'm using a lowly LG GT540 phone and it seems to do the job. When I bought my bangernomics Omega I ran a scan with it and it showed up an error with the crank sensor. Cleared the error, jiggled about with the wiring connector to the crank sensor and it's been perfect since...no more error codes!:D

Not sure what OS the Blackberry runs, but it's not Android. If you're around Athlone anytime soon you're more than welcome to test my phone/adapter with your car.:)

If your car is one of the VAG brands*, VCDS is your best bet from www.ross-tech.com

(E)OBD(2) scanners are well and good, but they're limited to a small number of standardised error codes related to emissions control in the engine ECU. Anything beyond that requires manufacturer specific diagnostics, which more often than not run to thousands of euro :( VCDS is the only enthusiast-priced full-featured diagnostic I'm aware of, but I'm open to correction.

*Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, Skoda (Some Bentleys, Lamborghinis too :D) Ford Galaxy may be compatible too given the amount of VW tech on board, but I can't confirm this.

You can also read basic fault codes on most OBD II cars with VCDS so it really is good value for money.
