Hi all new to the cycling side of boards , I've just gotten a new roadbike and I'm just wondering how far up the grand canal towpath could you get on a roadbike , It doesnt neccessarily have to be tarmac but a a reasonable surface you'd be comfortable cycling on

It covers 8.5Km from the 12th Lock at Inchicore (Black Horse) to the 3rd Lock in Lucan. The road surface would be fine for a road bike but there can be a lot of glass on it in places. The worst thing about it is the kissing gates. It requires you to get off the bike and the back on. I used to use it but got pi**ed off with it and as result i use the nangor rd instead.

Where would you be travelling to?

It's a designated national walking route, outside the Dublin suburban area (which has had / is having cycle routes added) you shouldn't really be on it on a bike...

The Grand Canal is grand for a roadbike up to the 12th Lock at Lucan but after that it's a bit muddy up to Hazelhatch and then it's ok again for a while. I would recommend a mountain bike though as it is bumpy and slippy in places and will be a lot wetter now.
