    Hi lads,

Thinking of going out to look at the new v50 and v60 volvos later.
    Anyone have either?
What are they like to live with - running costs, problems, good points.
Not concerned with how they handle, power etc as it'll have 3 kid seats in the back and won't be going round mondello shortly!!
    Thanks in advance.

V50 is coming to the end of it's life and is a little long in the tooth. It's also not that big and you'll struggle with 3 child seats in the back.

I haven't driven the D2 (1.6d) version of the S/V60 yet (although the same engine in a 508 was very impressive), but with the D3 engine it's a fantastic motor. Boot space isn't great for an estate and it's not exactly huge in the rear seats, but it has everything you need in the ES model (except bluetooth) and drives very, very well.

If I was on the look out for something in that class, I'd be hard pushed to make a choice between the V60 or a Superb Combi (2.0Tdi 140bhp models are now tax band B). Volvo wins for driving, Superb wins for space and equipment.

Thanks R.O.R...missus likes the v60...she'll be doing most of the miles.
    Nice looking motors alright.

V60 is nice but its pricey in comparison with the Superb Combi with similar spec. Don't forget the Volvo's 1000 euro delivery charge . Add metallic and maybe high performance audio for USB connectivity and the base price is a distant memory

Would a dealer "waive" the 1000 delivery charge if you were ready to buy but considered dropping the sale because of it!!

There is a portion of the delivery fee that is actually charged to the dealer (from the Transport company) then there are costs associated with cleaning and PDI, but it doesn't come anywhere close to €1,000.

I'm sure if you push the dealer hard, they will produce some discount to account for the delivery charge.

Buy a six month old V60 and let someone else take €1000 delivery charge as well as some of the depreciation. V60 in sport is a lovely looking car as is the V50. A V50 diesel probably isn't ideal for town and city driving because I think it has a dpf on both diesel engines anyway.

Having been in the back of a V50 all the way to Kerry from Dublin I can say that it's not the roomiest car but very comfortable all the same. It was a 1.6D too and was grand on the motorway too.

I was having a look at one of this only yesterday, along with a V70 which is what I had orginally gone in to look at. The first thing that stuck me was how small the boot in the V60 was. The dashboard and instrument stalks had a cheap plastic look and feel to them. This may not apply to the V60, but on the V70 the rear luggage cover is badly designed and gets far too easily wedged between the sides of the boot as you draw it back. That one thing put me off the car. It could be the strength of the Swedish Krone, but fundamentally they're over priced for what they are, imo.

The S60 & V60 share the same interior. The seats are the most comfortable i have ever sat in and the materials used throughout are top notch.

The D3 engine is lively and i am averaging 48 mpg in an S60 with a mixture of town and motorway driving. It's not as dynamic a drive as a bww but it is much better that an Audi, which feels vague in comparison.

Volvo have an Open Weekend coming up on the 11th - 13th November.

They are about to start advertising in newspapers and there are some special deals on the Ocean Race models in the V60.
Celebrating the 2011/2012 the Volvo Ocean Race model embraces a truly nautical feel and proudly displays the "Volvo Ocean Race Emblem" on the
front wing. Featuring 17'' "Pontos" Alloy wheels, Chrome and Aluminium detail throughout, "Volvo Ocean Race" Leather Upholstery, Door panels with
sail inspired stitching and 2 unique Exterior colours in Inscription™ Metalic Paint (Ocean Blue II metallic/Electric Silver metallic

Stick the upgraded stereo for the Bluetooth in that and you'd be all sorted.

Bear in mind that the S60 & V60 have no provision for a spare wheel. There isn't even a wheel well so you can't drop one in afterwards. You get a can of sealant but that will only work in cases where the tyre isn't badly damaged either on the tread or sidewall. It'll probably be ok in a lot of urban environments - depends on your situation really.

The interior is very nice and the 1.6 diesel is better than you might expect.

At first i though not having a spare would be an inconvenience, but in the past ten years i've maybe had six punctures, so it's really not that big a deal. If the OP's other half is like mine the chances are she wouldn't even attempt to put on a spare wheel if she got a puncture.

I read a post on Volvo forum a few weeks ago that someone did a calculation that is was less expensive to buy a new premium brand tyre than the fuel costs associated with the additional weight of having a full size spare in the boot (Based on 15,000 miles per annum at €1.40ish per litre). They obviously had way too much time on their hands.

The absence of a spare wheel would not impress me at all , I thought cars were legally required to carry a spare ?

Doubtful, If that were the case wouldnt all cars with run flats be illegal?

Heres a nice v60, 2011 only 11500, bit of t-cut and you'll have it nice and shiny.

I think that the Skoda Greenline models are the same and very likely others. I've been told that it helps with weight reduction for CO2 output certification but I'm open to correction on that.

I've plenty of urban-based relatives and friends who have gone years without a puncture whereas I've had three pothole-related sidewall failures in three years so a can of sealant would have left me stranded each time (45 profile tyres so not as robust as higher profile tyres). I'd hate to be heading off to the airport only to get an unrepairable puncture with no spare but as you can see it depends on your situation. No harm to be informed though.

I have driven the current model V50 1.6 diesel on a few occasions and have to say was quite impressed. It doesn't feel like a 1.6 and has a lot more power than the previous one. I was never a great fan but I quite enjoyed driving this one and has a nice 6 speed box and is very economic and with low tax I would seriously consider one..

I owned a S40 for 2 years, just take note that even though main dealers are generally expensive, in my experience Volvo parts are very pricey. While the car I owned had niggly problems over the 2 years I found it to be very comfortable and well built. Leather heated seats are a must in a Volvo imo, though they are no longer standard here on SE models which is a let down.

The one thing I know of Volvo's is that when we were kids the old mans 960 had built in booster seats - I imagine Volvo still do these the fold back and the seat returns to adult size.

    Mmmmmm.... 960....

The booster seat is an individual option these days I'm afaid. Volvo stopped being generous around the late 90's with things like heated seats, headlamp wash/wipe and the built in booster seat. These were once standard on even the most basic of models.

If I remember correctly it had everything a modern car has bar xenon lights and a nav system because they weren't available on European cars at the time.
If available as an individual option they might still make sense - means you wouldn't have to store the boosters when carting about adults.

I have had one puncture in 7 years of driving it. The can of goo gets you home.

Integrated booster seats are part of the family pack (along with power child locks) for €424 on the D3 and D5 manual models. If the OP will have 3 booster seats soon, and is ordering from factory, It's an option I'd definately specify.

Haven't seen it on the S/V60, but seen it in a few V50's and it's a pretty nifty system.

In the grand scheme of things €442 is less than 2% of the cost of the Volvo in question and you'd be hard pressed to match oem safety and integration

Geez lads, you're being very flaithúlach with the OP's cash. They're only a tenner each in Smyth's.
