RTE are reporting a young off duty Garda was swept away in a flood near Blessington after starting to direct traffic.

    Here's hoping he's found ok.

    Story here
A search and rescue operation is under way in Co Wicklow after an off-duty Garda was swept away in floods near Blessington.
It is thought the officer was swept away in a flood after attempting to divert traffic away from a dangerous bridge.
The Garda Helicopter, Coast Guard and several mountain rescue teams are involved in the operation.
The bridge near Ballysmuttan was in danger of being swept away by strong river flow.
It is thought several bridges in the area have collapsed this evening, but the newly-built bridge at Ballysmuttan remains in place.

He was off duty at the time of the incident, the guy was just trying to help out people. This is a horrible sad time.

My thoughts go out to his Family, Friends and Members of AGS.

RIP young man. It is a testament to the character of our young Garda colleague that he was doing his best to help people, in dangerous conditions, whilst off duty. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

    FINAL INSPECTION

    Written by Peter Hornbach

    Final Inspection

The Policeman stood and faced his God, Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, officer. How shall I deal with You?
Have you always turned the other cheek? To my Church have you been true?"

The officer squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Cause those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.

But I never took a penny that wasn't mine to keep,
Though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills just got too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help, though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me, I wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place among the people here.
They never wanted me around except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord, it needn't be so grand.
I've never expected or had too much. But if you don't, I'll understand."

There was silence all around the throne where the saints had often trod.
As the officer waited quietly for the answer of his God.

"Step forward now, Officer, you've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's Streets. You've done your time in Hell."

    Final Inspection

Hoping the rumours are just that, and the he is safe. I used to go to Manor Kilbride regularly as a kid, such a lovely place. Horrible to think it could be the scene of something tragic.

Ciaràn was a gentleman and although I did not know him well he was and will remain an example to all of us. He will be forever young and will now take his rightfull place amongst the hero's of the world. I hope Brenda, John, Shelly and young Alan find the strenght to overcome the most tragic of losses that can befall any family. Sleep well and dream easy Ciaràn. The sky now has a new star and it will shine brightly and forever more.

An example to all, both to Gardai and ordinary citizens, who gave his life while trying to protect his fellow citizens from danger. No doubt a caring, young and talented man who has been taken from his colleagues and his community far too soon.

    RIP
