so my ps3 stopped reading disks (just before a boss fight in Arkham City, sigh) and have done a few things as suggest on youchoob such as resetting the system settings, hoovering around the disk area and nothings working, so I'm getting the drive or laser, or both are bollocked, I got it in december 2009 so its out of warranty, anyone get theirs repaired by sony themselves? or should i just cut my losses and get a new one?

Get onto retailer(assuming you have proof of purchase) and get a replacement one*:

Thread basically says that a console should work for more than 2 years.

*Also assuming you have not voided the warranty by removing the sticker.

thanks for that, its not 2 years old yet, well just under it, so will give gamestop a ring tomorrow and see what my options are, its never beem tampered with, its the original HD and its never given a spot of bother aside from Black Ops crashing a few times but that was happening for loads of people.

does the system backup work? theres not that much stuff on it anyway as I have an external hd connected to it with all my movies and the like on it, but I sure as sh1te dont want to lose stuff like my COD achievements and emblems, can I just stick the save data onto a usb or my harddrive?

I may be wrong with this, but are these not linked to your online account, the only thing you would lose would be off-line game saves then just follow this.
