    Hi.

With the analogue signal being turned off next year I am wondering about the following situation with network 2.

I have sky as we cannot receive the analogue signal where we live. I have a standard sky plus box at the moment. When the analogue signal is turned off and network two is transmitted in hd, will that mean I will have to upgrade my sky box to the hd one. And get roped into another year contract with sky.

No, you will still be able to get 16:9 SD into distant future.

All that will be turned off is 14:9 Analogue transmission. The current 16:9 SD and 16:9 HD transmissions will continue.

No. sky will continue to broadcast the standard definition version of RTE2. btw network2 changed its name back to RTE2 back in 2004.
RTE2HD is already broadcasting but is currently only available through the
Saorview platform. Sky may carry the channel in the future, but at the moment it's exclusive to Saorview and RTE probably want to keep it that way in order to promote/push their new service. If Sky ever do broadcast it then yes you will need a SkyHD box to view it.
Saorview is broadcast at a much higher power level than the analogue system, so it might be possible to receive it in your area with an outdoor UHF Ariel and a suitable saorview set top box or a TV with an integrated mpeg4 tuner. RTE state 98% of households will be able to access the service through an ariel when the analogue service is switched off in Oct 2012. The other 2% will be able to access it through a yet to be launched satellite service called Ka-Sat.

Actually it's probably broadcast at a lower power level but due to the nature of the DTT signal it doesn't deteriorate like the analogue signal. A figure of up to -20db lower than analogue has been quoted for the UK DTT transmitters.

While RTÉNL hasn't published the actual pre and post ASO power levels the max allowed DTT power levels from each site can be found in this post.

The satellite service will be called Saorsat from the Ka-Sat satellite.
