Apple TV for a dummy

I have to say, I am a bit of a sucker for gadgets, and am looking at the Apple TV. Really all I know is what its MEANT to do ie what Apple tell us. However, can someone explain what it can really do after jailbreaking etc, simply please? For movies atm I download from my laptop, copy to my multimedia HD, have that hooked…

For movies atm I download from my laptop, copy to my multimedia HD, have that hooked up to my tv, and watch movies that way. Or if i wanted to stream movies, I just hook my laptop up to my TV and watch that way.

If anyone can explain, either on here or private message, I would be very greatful

once you jailbreak it you can install xbmc on it which allows you to play any media file you may have across your network. your external drive would have to be connected to your laptop and your laptop to the same network as the ATV

you could also install an add on to xbmc which would do the same, but instead of you downloading, you stream straight to the tv, but as thats against copyright, we cant tell you where to get it or how to install it.
