recently after being made unemployed, i am thinking of going into hurley making ( more of past time then profit making) to keep me going for a couple of years.

does any body know where i can get ask hurley planks around the leinster area?

I may be wrong but I think a lot of our hurls are now imported. I have heard that the brother of a famous kilkenny hurler is set up in slovakia or somewhere like that where there is a huge supply of ash available and manufacturing the hurleys there probably for quite cheap.

You're on about Jack Carey yea?
He just imports the timber from there I thought..

I don't think he actually makes the hurls over there.

I thought the majority of the ash used for hurls was coming in from the UK/abroad because we couldn't supply enough.

Yeah last time I was talking to a maker he said the ash is imported from eastern europe by nearly all hurley makers nowadays.

I work in the freight business and have seen containers of ash from Sweden being imported for hurley makers.

Have seen a few programmes on this down through the years, and apparently a lot of it is imported from Russia & Norway. It seems quite bizarre as Ash can be grown in Ireland... Why cant we grow Ash and use it for hurleys as well as export it???? I am not a forestry expert i'm afraid!

Also, I read about the cannings in Galway going into the hurley making business recently; think they mentioned they had to import the ash too....

I sell ash planks for hurleys from Slovakia. So far hurley makers who bought from us were satisfied so it shows that Slovak Ash is good. If you are interested let me know.
