    http://www.google.com/recaptcha/learnmore
reCAPTCHA improves the process of digitizing books by sending words that cannot be read by computers to the Web in the form of CAPTCHAs for humans to decipher. More specifically, each word that cannot be read correctly by OCR is placed on an image and used as a CAPTCHA. This is possible because most OCR programs alert you when a word cannot be read correctly.

But if a computer can't read such a CAPTCHA, how does the system know the correct answer to the puzzle? Here's how: Each new word that cannot be read correctly by OCR is given to a user in conjunction with another word for which the answer is already known. The user is then asked to read both words. If they solve the one for which the answer is known, the system assumes their answer is correct for the new one. The system then gives the new image to a number of other people to determine, with higher confidence, whether the original answer was correct.

    Well I'll be!

So, is everyone okay with google 'using' us to decipher books?

I personally thinks it's an awesome idea

goes the same with a lot of google products, for example in the states they have free directory enquiries but they are using the calls and speech for voice recognition software etc

there's a certain allowable rate of input failure on captchas so not sure how good an idea this is. you're usually allowed to get 2 letters wrong in a 2 word string

Presumably each word will go to more than one CAPTCHA form.

yeah but if the word is such that it is an easy mistake to make, then you could end up having the wrong word being used as the image to text translation

If you give out a word to 30 people what are the chances that the majority will all make the same mistake?

depends on how blurred or poorly printed the text is i suppose

Yeah but if you give it to 30,000 people you'll have a much better idea what the correct interpretation is.

Hmm it is a good idea, though I'm not sure I like being used as free labour.
