Had a look at the pub numbers in the Indo today and threw them into a ratio calculator using the wikipedia numbers for population. (Hey I was curious!)

These are the numbers of pubs per thousand people in each county in 2011. Some pretty big differences across the board, I guess a lot has to do with dispersed populations but interesting nonetheless.

    1) Leitrim 3.54
    2) Roscommon 3.46
    3) Kerry 3.17
    4) Mayo 2.96
    5) Cavan 2.94
    6) Tipperary 2.81
    7) Clare 2.78
    8) Longford 2.50
    9) Sligo 2.35
    10) Donegal 2.30
    11) Killkenny 2.16
    12) Limerick 2.04
    13) Galway 2.02
    14) Westmeath 2.01
    15) Waterford 1.98
    16) Cork 1.94
    17) Carlow 1.88
    18) Louth 1.86
    19) Wexford 1.80
    20) Monaghan 1.80
    21) Offaly 1.73
    22) Laois 1.52
    23) Wicklow 1.15
    24) Meath 1.14
    25) Kildare 0.89
    26) Dublin 0.63

I'd be an alcoholic if I lived in Leitrim

The ratio of tourists to locals has a lot to do with it too. Here in Kilkenny we have sh!tloads of tourists, plus stag parties and hen parties to bate the band. So we rank high.

As far as I know we have the highest alcohol consumption in Ireland, which in turn has one of the highest of any country in the world.

I don't drink much myself. I prefer getting my kicks on channel six, but there you go.

    Number of pubs =/= boozeheadedness.

Higher density populations like Dublin and Cork would have large pubs which could hold hundreds of people. More rural areas probably have more pubs with a small capacity.

It certainly appears that way in the OP.

What would be interesting is see do these stats correlate to the amount of drunk driving convictions in each county.

Bet you any money the most convictions still result in Dublin, the lowest on the chart.

In Donegal they have Sibins in the mountains serving poteen which aren't on the list, if they were they'd probably be no. 1.

Oh I know you can find some good poiteen up in the hills - in fact my grandad used to make it - it seems he had his regular customers his reputation was so good:) But I had thought it was very rare nowadays to find it unless you can go to some or the remotest places. Besides it was the Shebeen thing I was on about - are the not extinct in Donegal?

The Indo's results only includes what they describe as "pubs". Its unclear if that includes more urban establishments like clubs, bars in hotels, places with liquor licenses etc.
