Netflix is going to be launching here and in the UK next year. This is brilliant news. They have the best streaming option for TV shows, films and the like. If they have the same catalogue here as in the US you will never run out of things to stream.

Obviously, if you do things illegally you'll have been fine up to now. But this service might change you to the light side. From the Americans I know, a lot have said the only reason they don't fully abandon subscription TV when they get Netflix is because of sports coverage. So if you have a decent internet connection, this might end up saving you quite a bit of money (if you're willing to abandon Sky or UPC.)

Didn't they recently increase prices by 60% for some customers?

I'll reserve judgement / whoops & hollers til I see their prices.

but will they make shows available to us when they air on american tv, or will we still to have wait till its shown on sky,

if its the latter ive no interest, i want shows as they air,

I think that was for their DVD/Bluray rentals, with us they'll likely be exclusively streaming, which should keep costs down. So they'll probably only charge us about twice the US price, for almost half the selection...... if we're lucky........

That was all cancelled after massive subscription cancellations and share price collaspe, they were splitting the dvd and streaming side and charging for both. I think we just get streaming here when launched so will get screwed anyway. I'm sure they'll price to match Irish market, not their Us pricing.

Considering they announced this evening massive company cost increases for content for 2012, they wont be doing the new markets too cheaply I imagine

This. I refuse to pay to wait for 1-2 months for a show that is freely, if illegally, available online

I'll bet you we'll pay twice as much as the UK and four times as much as the US, us suckers in Ireland make up for discounted countries.

Good news. I wonder will it sway the way of the illegal downloader? Not that I'm one....

Hope it comes out on Xbox too.

^ it depends *IF* they have US shows within hours of broadcast, if there is this region locked BS and waiting 2-3 months for fresh US shows....no, it won't curb downloading.

Yeah absolutely. I'd say it will cost them a pretty penny to get all the shows streamed here a few hours after. I'd say Sky and UPC will be throwing money to try and prohibit them as much as possible.

Still tho, a bit of competition for Sky and UPC is always good.

i doubt they will have tv shows in ireland, and if they did they certainly won't be on a few hours after broadcast, apple still don't sell tv shows in ireland, i'd say the irish selection will be very limited

Even if it was only movies then happy days

There is blinkbox for those that can't wait. Pretty limited selection though. And the pricing is a little on the steep side.

Pretty happy about this announcement myself, I'm happy to pay a reasonable fee. Can't be arsed with megavideo and the likes. Really hope it comes for the xbox and other devices though.

Won't get over excited by it, seems like it may rise the contention ratio for us with our crap broadband speeds

    Sunday October 30 2011

Irish internet users could face a nightmare scenario if "bandwidth hog" Netflix rolls out as promised in early 2012, as Ireland's creaking broadband system is struggling with the amount of data it currently handles.
According to Miguel Ponce De Leon, chief technologist at the Telecommunications Software & Systems Group in WIT, Ireland's consumer broadband sector is already perilously overstretched.
"If Netflix gets the same volume of customers streaming movies on their computers in Ireland as they do in the US, where it accounts for 32 percent of peak downloads, everyone's internet speeds would suffer."
While broadband access in Ireland has improved in the last 12 months, download speeds are still extremely poor, with a recent industry survey rating Ireland 23rd in the EU.
Netflix announced plans to launch its service in Ireland and the UK earlier last week. While it has not detailed pricing plans for the UK and Ireland, in the US it allows customers to watch unlimited movies online for a $7.99 (€5.63) fee per month.

Well it definitely won't get the same percentage of customer as the US anyway. If it even gets as many hits as the RTE Player I'd be surprised!

I'm sure we will get TV Shows on Netflix, but only those released on DVD. Not a hope we'll get any just after broadcast. I'll hold all judgement when I see the content and prices.

Ya with our huge population we subsidise the US and other countries with populations many times larger than ours.

I seen a report not to long ago that showed Irish broadband was better than the US, UK and similar to that of France, Germany and Italy so we're better off than the author thinks. UPC have been good for Irish broadband and it looks like Eircom are finally starting to get the finger out.

Not likely to get broadband where I live. Not in the near future anyway. Eircom have been bullshitting us for years about it becoming available in the near future. Best I can get is mobile broadband which has a data limit.

So I'll continue to stay on sky like many others.
