Is he aggressive? Or defensive?

I have started noticing a trait in my lad lately. He is grand with other dogs usually and will let any dog come sniff him and play with him. He spends a lot of his day with his own pack in the dog sitter and his best mates are bishons (he is a great dane).

Recently (he is a year old at the mo and in his teenage years), i have noticed that when another dog starts barking or growling at him he is more inclined to throw his weight around and bark back. In one way I would prefer that he stands his ground and not cower away but in another i want to make sure this is not being overly aggressive?
