New wired USB won't work - Vista SP2

I had a tiny Labtec wired USB mouse for my Dell Studio Vista SP2 laptop but it died - probably courtesy of my 1 year old's saliva.

I bought a small Logitech M125 wired USB mouse but cannot get it to work. It gets power - the red optical light is on - but the pointer does not move.

The Logitech site says that it does not need drivers. When the Found New Hardware dialog pops up if I choose "Locate and install driver software" I eventually get a dialog that says it could not locate a driver (with a comment that the INF file could be Win95 format). If I choose "Ask me again later" it obviously doesn't do anything.

The mouse works on another computer.
I have the same issue with another, larger, Logitech mouse - red light on but mouse pointer does not move.

I could not find anything useful in Event Viewer. There might have been something when I first tried to use the mouse on Friday afternoon but I cannot find those entries now.

The issue must be with my laptop. Any suggestions on debugging it?

Have you tried plugging in the mouse and then booting the laptop.

Did you install any driver with the Labtec mouse? Some mice come with propriatery Drivers (sometimes to extend functionality) so it may be conflicting with Windows to install the new mouse. Worth taking a look anyhow. Take a look under Mice & Pointing devices in Device Manager and see if there is anything appearing there

    No.
    From the Labtec web site:
This product does not ship with software. It uses the native USB drivers already present in your operating system.

There are 3 listed there - Dell Touchpad and 2 HID-compliant mouse (Manufacturers: Microsoft; Locations: "on Microsoft eHome Infrared Transceiver" and "on USB Human Interface Device").
