I just left my car in for service and NCT check there. they rang me and said my tyres are worn and i need 4 new one. he quoted 175 euro a tyre.
This is annoying me as i only got new tyres in January and i've done about 15,000kms since, i think they are trying to pull a fast one. any advice.

Check the tyre thread depth yourself. 175 is a price for a really premium tyre and if that's whats on the car already they should last way longer than 15k. Certainly all 4 tyres being gone is suspicious. Maybe the front ones if it has a heavy diesel engine but still unlikely IMO.

What brand of tyre have you on the car?

bridgestone. same crowd put them on last time for 120 a tyre.

    I just paid 99eur for 205 55d r15 Bridgestone tyres in cork.

Any idea on size? 40/45 last damn all in spirited driving.

Ask them what thread depth in on them or measure it yourself, less than 3mm and heading into winter they may well advise changing them, if you have only gotten 15,000kms out of them there won't be much left in them timewise if they are down to 3mm.

I would doubt they are lieing as it's easy for you to verify the state of your tyres.

Is there any chance they could have fitted partially worn tyres last time, either way I'd take my car back and avoid giving that crowd any more business, at 175 a tyre they'd want to be amazing tyres.

he's said they were going to put the same tyres that are on it at present. but they cost me 120 the last time, its a diesel passat so maybe as u said the front 2 but all 4 is taking the piss.

think i'm going to measure the dept myself when i get the car back.

Your driving style will affect tyre wear of course - don't know if that could be a factor?

Many low profile tyres cost that and more in the premium brands, nothing amazing about them.

okay just a quick update on this,

I rang the garage and asked for the thred dept. 3.5 on all 4. i asked what was legal limit. 1.6 they said,

why would you ring me and try sell me permium tyres when i didn't need them.

bull**** answer followed about winter coming!!
i will never use this garage again, tried to pull a fast one on me.

Yeah, that's all well and good, but if you look at anything like 225/40/R18 you're talking ~200 per tyre, for most makes - doesn't have to be premium. Saying "that's an outrage, I got XXX for YYY" is meaningless without comparing like with like.

Just beware, summer tyres usually come with 8mm from new, so they're over 50% worn, and 1.6mm is really just a legal limit, it's not an indication that they're still as good or safe at that stage (they're not). And they're not wrong in telling you that with winter coming, the less thread depth you have the worse off you'll be, especially without winter tyres.

The recognised industry and manufacturer safety limit is 3.0mm. At 3.0mm and below your tyres are only operating at approx 20% of their ability and would be especially rubbish in ice and snow.

Bridgestone also raised their prices a few months ago so that also explains the price difference.

The garage did nothing wrong in advising you IMO, they didn't force you to buy anything.

IMO this is yet another case of a garage actually doing its job properly and yet ending up being bad mouthed due to a lack of customer knowledge/understanding.

IMO the garage should have in the first instance informed the chap that the tyres were down to 3.5mm, below 3mm is noted on NCT sheets, the legal limit is 1.6mm and that they'll be below 3mm in a month or two given how they have worn so far.

Simply telling the chap that they are worn and needing replacement isn't good enough really.

Agreed that just telling a customer something is needed without explanation is bad form, I would always try to explain but more often then not, people just stare at you blankly and just want you to say, you need this and it will cost this.

Some members here would be forgetting that dealing with people with an interest in cars and car maintenance like most motors members is VERY different to dealing with joe soap puplic who couldn't have any less interest in what your telling them, only how much its going to cost.

The reason I would still always try to explain is that its always the one person that you don't bother explaining to that ends up telling all their friends that they were ripped off....or starts a thread like this.

I can imagine if you said the words "Well, it's not necessary just now but..." that's all they'd hear, think you were trying to rip them off, and the car was better than the day it came out of the factory. Irish mindset....the mind boggles

100% For most people, once the car leaves the garage after a service, it needs no attention and nothing will wear out/break/squeak/rattle or even get dirty until its serviced again next year.

OP just put on a set of Chinese Ditch-finders (Sunny/Triangle/Kingforest/Ling Long/Sunew/Wanli/Goodride/Fullrun/Jinyu to name but a few) and grin as the miles climb and the tyres don't wear....
