N4 This Morning

I saw a cyclist riding against the flow of traffic in the hard shoulder along the N4 outbound this morning. I passed him around Lucan at 7.20 so it was very dark. Anyone else spot him? Pretty crazy thing to do I thought. You really have to wonder about some people.

    Definitely in the hard shoulder?
There's a cycle lane along part of the inbound route between Leixlip and Lucan where I've seen people cycle in both directions. Not too clear on whether you or the cyclist were heading outbound.

Was he going the wrong way in the bus lane? There's a bus lane rather than hard shoulder on the N4 at Lucan isn't there?

    Sounds insane either way though...

He was heading towards town in the outbound lane and it was on the stretch of road before Woodies. No cycle lane or bus lane there as far as I know so he was on the hard shoulder. I was in the other lane heading inbound and couldn't believe it when I looked across and saw him. He had lights and a hi vis top of some description but still pretty dangerous.

I don't think there is cycle lane on this stretch. There is a pavement which has some pictures of bicycles painted on it, but it is not legally marked as a cycle lane, so cycling on it has the same legal standing as cycling on any other pavement.

If they were wearing a helmet it should be OK :)

I'm not doubting this at all, but there are cycle lane signs and markings, so I assumed this was a de facto cycle lane. You often see people walking on it as well though, so I often wondered how that was meant to work legally, since there isn't space for both a wlaking lane and a cycle lane. I see a woman pushing a buggy nealy every day, and I wondered whether she has right of way there.

I think the only bit of hard shoulder is the bit between the slip roads under the bridge, so he was going to run out of hard shoulder pretty soon. Unless he was planning to cross over to the Foxhunter after the bridge? Can't see where else he could go. Bit of a kamikaze effort no matter what he was up to.

Around 7:30am before the Ballyowen rd ("Woodie's") turn? I saw a cyclist squeezing past her one morning. She had the right to be there, the cyclist didn't.

Yes, that's the one. There's quite often another lass further back towards Leixlip as well. I'd have assumed common courtesy if nothing else would give her right of way, but I wondered about the legal situation. The part of the footpath that *isn't* covered in bike markings is about 6 inches wide!
